  • I saw this on the news today. I guess they are trying to say they have made these cats this way to help understand some diseases and treat those diseases.

I can't figure out what disease a glow in the dark cat might find a cure for. Granted I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm just talking out of my ass again.

They are able to alter them genetically and see an obvious phenotype. In this case, glowing in the dark. This phenotype is chosen because it is harmless to the cats.

Point is they are able to alter them genetically with phenotypic results and they are healthy.

Ah-Ha! I knew someone here could explain that to me in words I could actually understand.

    Clear as mud!

I bet they can get a lot of money for glow in the dark cats. Every Paris and Britney would want one to replace their current pet.

I want a glow in the dark cat! That would be so awesome...

I think they are just proving that they can successfully mess with genes. This, in their opinions, is a stepping stone to being able to mess with genes more to prevent diseases etc.

Maybe when I'm in my 90's some gene therapy will in some way cure some disease I have, and I can ask them to throw in the glow-in-the-dark for free!

They will need to get a UV light emitter with the cat as a bonus. In order for the cat to glow in the dark you need to excite the fluorescent protein with UV light. I'm not sure what intensity they are using but surely you don't want to put your pet through UV light sessions.

How long before some group of madmen clone an army of part-human, part-lion, part-terradactyl chimeras? 10 years? 20 years? 5 years?
