An Australian soldier was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan yesterday, another was seriously injured by a road-side bomb.

Prime Minister John Howard says

"It's a reminder to all of us that the men and women of the ADF (Australian Defence Force) who go overseas in our name put their lives on the line to preserve our way of life," he said.

"The operation in Afghanistan involves resisting brutal terrorism, it's a just cause and this soldier was part of an Australian contribution to that just cause.

"But that in no way lessens the loss and the bereavement and the grief that will be felt by his mates in his unit, other members of the Australian army and the broader Australian Defence Force family."

"This is a sad day for the Australian Army, it's a sad day for the Australian community," he said.

"Somebody who loses his or her life on service for our country is owed a special respect and a special debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid."

Soldier's death saddens prime minister
Prime Minister John Howard has expressed sadness at the death of an Australian soldier in Afghanistan.

"On behalf of the entire nation I want to say how saddened I am by the news of the death of an Australian soldier in Afghanistan," he told reporters in Hobart.

"We send our love and sympathy to his family, we know it is a time of great grief for them and we offer our prayers and our support to them and to the other loved ones of this soldier."

Mr Howard said the death was a reminder of the dangerous work being undertaken by Australian troops in Afghanistan.

He said the ADF was a close-knit family and their solidarity would be very strong at this time.

The soldier was killed and another seriously wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated next to their military vehicle in Afghanistan's Oruzgan province on Monday, six kilometres from their base at Tarin Kowt.

Mr Howard said the injured soldier was being well cared for, and arrangements for the return of the body of the deceased soldier were being handled by the ADF.

"This is a sad day for the Australian Army, it's a sad day for the Australian community," he said.

"Somebody who loses his or her life on service for our country is owed a special respect and a special debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid."

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says Australians should reflect on the sacrifices being made by Australian troops in the fight for freedom.

Speaking after the death in southern Afghanistan, Dr Nelson said the job the troops were doing was necessary.

"Every Australian should stop to reflect at some time through the course of today on what Australian soldiers are doing in our name, on our behalf, in Afghanistan and other parts of the world," he said.

"We're in Afghanistan because we are involved in a struggle for freedom not only of the Afghans themselves, but of the free world."

I'm sure that it is not just me who echo these thoughts, but Howard, Bush and Co, BRING OUR TROOPS HOME.

My thoughts are with the soldiers family, R.I.P

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Words from the Foregin Minister of Australia.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer dismissed speculation that Australia will withdraw troops from Afghanistan, pledging to "see the mission through".

"It is my view that the Australian people, in the event of one of our soldiers being killed, would not support an immediate surrender to the sort of people who killed our soldier," he told National Nine News.

What a ridiculous thing to say. So according to his logic, we are gonna say 'leave our troops there, because one has been killed. We want to fight more?' Bring the troops home. Sooner rather than later. Any connection between his reality and mine is purely coincidental.

and the mission is what, again?

alex alex alex your view does not reflect reality, let alone the will of the australian people.

I'm sick and tired of these monkeys (Howard, Downer Bush etc) pulling these strings when it doesn't really effect them. Would they send their son/daughter to war: NO

Sure Terrorism is bad, nobody wants it, but this war is not the answer.

To try and justify this war, while our soldiers; somebodys father, mother, son or daughter dies is ridiculous. And as for the Australian people, the only people that want the troops in Iraq/afghanistan are these monkeys pushing buttons in Canberra.

Not to mention the innocent loss of life in Iraq. I heard somewhere months and months ago, that during this war, the population of Iraq has decreased 2%. That is a shit-load. that is like filling the M.C.G(100,000 capacity) and killing off 2,000 people. This is not right.

You would of thought this world would of learnt a lesson after the massive loss of live in the world wars and Vietnam.

I'm very sorry to hear. It's something we have to deal with every day in the U.S. The average is 2-3 per day. But, as we can see, we're liberating Iraq, so it's all worth it.
