One of my favorites. A wunderkid at 23 with the "fuggin" Naked and the Dead and onward as a chronicler of his times....
Good dude, brilliant at times, a lover of life. An American artist.

If you've never ventured to read Ancient Evenings give it a go. It's epic in proportion, strictly Mailer in style, and speaks volumes, I think, of the human psyche in the modern world in general. He says he spent 10 years writing it, and in turns that only experience in living will tell you, you don't doubt he did.
I didn't even know about the Jesus in the first person novel he wrote.
I hope its a bunch better than that Marylin Monroe (in the first person) crap he wrote.
The Executioners Song is also a must-read, although, it must be said that even though a Pulitzer was awarded for the work, there were too many contributions from others to conclude that it was a single-handed performance.

And, if you're a protester of any sort, you may gain some insight from The Armies of the Night. Excellent reading.

I loved Armies of the Night.
He was so awesome on so many levels.
    RIP old friend.
Crazy...when your heroes are passing on.
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
