Motif of harmful sensation

I was googling around trying to find an article I had read some time ago about an educated English explorer who had witnessed the death of a boy in remote Africa sometime in the mid- 1800's. The death was caused by a witch doctor of the boy's tribe, apparently just by uttering a single word, or phrase, to the boy.
I haven't found the article, yet.
I did find this "motif of harmful sensation" article in the wikipedia. It says, "The motif of harmful sensation refers to the physical or mental damage that a person suffers merely by experiencing what should normally be a benign sensation. The phenomenon appears in both traditional and modern stories.
While reading the piece, I got to thinking how this could be translated into how our media works, or how these message boards, et al, on the internet work sometimes.
A sort of Motif of Negative Sensation.
