I'm looking for some knowledge on how this works. It just seems to me there's a lot of money for nothing being spent by consumers in this market.

Anyone who knows anything?

All of it. I don't understand where the middleman comes in if our tax dollars put the satellites out there in the first place.

Okay, I can see that...they pay the government for a license of some sort. But, are their fees representative of the service they provide? Is anyone watching that?

that's assuming that the US is launching said commercial satellites. which isn't necessarily true.

    for instance:

your google is as good as mine.

Right. I do remember hearing news of some corporation launching their own satellite a few years ago, and that it would have been the first of it's kind. Which leads me to believe most, if not all the US satellites out there are out there with because we payed for it.

So...i'm thinking, why doesn't the public (taxpayers) own a license of their own?

i don't think that assumption in correct.

but again, the onus would be on you to dig into that.

from what i can see, there is a large global market in satellite launch services.

Alright. I'm not finding much. I'm usually a better googler and can find what I need, but this is a tough one.

I hope my tax money isn't going to provide satellites for satellite TV. I haven't subscribed to TV in over 10 years. I have a lot of money owed to me.

But, your taxes do go to communications one way or another.

from everything i can find, it appears that countries are eager to get into this market of providing launch services.

but it also appears that the commercial services providers exist to fill the need for cheaper, better launch services.

which says to me that getting a government to toss up your space junk isn't cheap. which implies that this isn't some stupid government subsidized corporate activity. but who knows.

whoever launched fox's satellites should go to the hague on account of american idol alone.
