I recently bought a new bootleg "Youthcare 2003" and it had this song on it and it struck me as an incredibly powerful argument against capital punishment.
Ed totally did the song justice of course !!
What thoughts do people have on this ?

    :)
yea, i must admit i was never a cash fan and rather ignorant of much of his music. however, hearing that tune on the beneroya release, and then sure...seeing the cash bio-pic walk the line really was quite educational about cash and his music. and absolutely, good tune.

I haven't seen "Walk the Line " yet, it is on my list of things to do after hearing that song.
It's great how Ed digs these things up and breathes new life into them. I don't know of anyone else who both bothers, or has the talent to pull it off. "Masters of War" is another triumph for him in this vein.

I just finished watching Walk the Line not 10 minutes ago! It really was a good movie. Their acting and singing was amazing - so glad they won the awards. :)
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."
  • i like the song too, although not a fan so to speak. on the original (it was recorded in folsom prison) when he sings, "so i spit in his face and i hit him in the eye" you can hear a hundred inmates cheer and woop, pretty cool.

but yer i also watched walk the line and thought it ended too quickly, it spent so long building up and then it was all over?? it annoyed me.

'Cuz the goddamned thing it works just fine.
I got 10 more minutes to go.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

  • Just wanted to make sure you guys knew that song was written by Shel Silverstein (yes, the same guy who wrote "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic") He has written several very satirical songs, and also wrote for Playboy in the sixties I believe. I do love the version that the boys recorded for Benaroya, and it was awesome live, trust me!

This is interesting, I assumed that Cash wrote it given the way it was introduced, but of course, in that era many if not most songs were written by songwriters rather than singers.
This really gives more credibility to Ed's version as he owns it as much as Cash.
I haven't heard the other songs you mention.
Great comments geneally guys, thankyou !!
