    and?
  • And?

In fiscal year 2002, Wasilla took in $6.1 million in earmarks.

Boise, Idaho -- which has more than 190,000 residents -- received $6.9 million in earmarks in fiscal 2008.

  • So the mayor of a town tried to secure federal funding to help the town she was the mayor of?

Sounds like someone doing their job.

I fail to see how this is a problem on any level. SHE WAS THE MAYOR OF THE TOWN TRYING TO HELP HER TOWN... and it sounds like she did a damned good job of it, a lot better than boise at least.
  • But... but... I thought that she was a government reformer?

  • I have read some things indicating as Gov. she favored Wasilla at the expense of other places... THAT is a problem.
    This is not.

That's the problem.... if you are a mayor, governor, representative or senator, bringing money into your town, city or state is a good thing.... unless you aren't from there.

It goes back to the whole hatred of incumbent thing... People want to vote all incumbents out, except theirs. And one of the reason that they like theirs, is that they bring home federal money.

  • An earmark for a youth shelter for $500,000? Sounds admirable enough but in a town of 7,000 I wonder how many kids need to be sheltered and why?

The thing is, they are trying to sell her as someone that is against waste and earmarks. Apparently she was for it before she was against it. Last week.

I don't see any problems with someone obtaining them if they are available. That's called doing her job.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the government for handing them out. Of course, that's what you get when you lose freedoms by increasing taxes - the government has more power to do whatever it wants.

where is Matthew Lesko in this thread?

The number 1 issue with these types of earmarks are that politicians (and voters) view federal money as free money and they use that to get elected.... and it works.

The bridge to nowhere was only cancelled after Alaskans would have had to to pay more money for it.

I don't want to speak for him, but I think they're saying the problem is that Palin is being set up, along with McCain, as someone who wants earmarks out of Congress. Laudable enough. McCain himself has said he will not sign any bills into law with earmarks if elected. Cool. But it kind of dilutes your message when she lobbied for a massive amount of federal earmarks. Kind of like her flip-flop on this bridge to nowhere project. I think both of those are more damaging charactertistics of her career than the pregnancy or that trooper thing.
