If a republican or democrat is elected into office, the path this country is taking will remain its course.
its not Bush's administration that is the cause of the rising problems this country is facing. The problem is the american voters ignorance when entering the voting booth.. the people have the power only when they are voting for the candidates they believe should be president... not what the media and general population of ignorants has thrown at you.
these two parties have taken advantage of you and its evident and apparent when these candidates are receiving thousands of votes pre-election without even putting anything on the table.. especially when the candidates have the power to make a difference now and in the past and havent.. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THEY WILL WHEN THEY ARE ELECTED
please open your eyes.

Kill Your Television!!! Go see candidates in person. Research them yourself, then decide who is best.
Moreover, keep tabs on them when they are in office. They start pulling shit you don't like, call them on it. Please.
It's sad that people put more discussion/thought into who should win the latest reality TV contest than their elected officials.

I agree, which is why I'm registered as an independent.
However, I feel like I lost quite a bit of my idealism (hope for the future?) after I voted for Nader in 2000 and ended up with Bush. What's a girl to do?
Keep on truckin' sister!
Your ideals are worth the uphill battle, no? If you give up on them who else is going to keep up the good fight for ya?

how would you go about doing it?
In sum, everyone is stupid except you.
tell me, how have you been able to emerge so enlightened out of the dredge of the mostly stupid American population and still find time to tell everyone how much smarter you are than everyone else?
you'd think if you had that much knowledge, you might have more important things to spend your time on
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
True. But when it comes to the voting booth and you can only choose one... it's like your ideals turn against each other, ya know? I mean, I can support the end of the two-party system all I want on an everyday basis. But if voting for Nader puts Bush in office, it's almost like supporting/voting for ideals that are "too" progressive can actually cause regression. :(
Maybe like with other things, we'll need to hit bottom, before we'll change for the better.

That's what I'm afraid of. :(
I'm sorry you're afraid. I'm pissed off, ready to fight and will not concede.

And I seriously wouldn't mind it if that's what it finally takes to get people to realize we can do much better than what we have consistently been settling for all these years.
I want to push to make this country great and not keep settling for mediocre.

That reminds me of an Ani Difranco lyric:
'Why don't ya give me a call and say you're willing to fight for what you think is real, for what you think is right.'

Complacency is drowning out our spirit to fight, to take risks and to stand up for what we believe in.

I am with you 100%. My mom and I have discussed this at length. It's part of the reason I won't compromise my vote by handing it to Obama or Clinton. I am sick of people settling. They go for what they think will sustain the level at which things have already deteriorated, instead of putting in the effort for what is possible.
If everybody has to lose everything before they are willing to stand up for what they truly want, then so be it. Game on.

Seriously.
Why are we so lazy? Why are we so afraid?

Exactly. I'm tired of people living in fear and underestimating the power of their own voice and ability to change things in this supposed democratically ran country that is of, by and for the PEOPLE.
Do people remember what that even means these days?

Well, I think I'm pissed off, ready to fight and will not concede and afraid that realistically we'll have to hit rock bottom before we see big enough change.
I'm not suggesting it wouldn't be worth it if we did hit rock bottom - just that it would be better if it didn't have to come to that.
I know it's not ideal, but it's nice to know others have had it. It's also understandable to be afraid of what this country will become before we change.

I think we'll have to evolve eventually, but I wonder how long it will take.
It's too bad we don't evolve at the same rate technology advances.
Women have had the right to vote in America for less than 100 years. It took more than 70 years of fighting to gain that right. http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/suffrage/history.htm
We may have to fight for the rest of our lives, but - heck, what else are we going to do?
