Your definition of "maverick"

This word is getting tossed around with McCain/Palin. I'm kind of over-it. But I do wonder, what is your definition of "maverick"?

I'm thinking that spending the last couple of years voting with the party you represent, really isn't mavericky. That's voting along party lines.

I'm not saying McCain wasn't a maverick at one time. I think he definitely was, but not recently. Probably the last couple years. By his own admission, he's voted with the wishes of the Bush administration 90% of the time. How is that a maverick?
