"In the first five months of 2008, 433 new homes were started, compared to 240 in the same period last year, it said.

Settlements are a crucial issue for Palestinians, who fear they will create "facts on the ground" rendering a viable Palestinian state impossible.

Israeli settlements on the Palestinian side of the Green Line, which marks the edge of the West Bank, are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who is a favourite to replace scandal-hit Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said settlement building had been reduced "in a most dramatic way" - although she did not specify the timeframe she was referring to - and was limited to "small activities""

  • They want peace obviously.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

  • I know many of you hate Pat Buchanan, but he's said some very negative things about Israel.

One of the funniest things I heard recently was that McCain's VP candidate Palin was connected to Buchanan, and this reflected poorly on her. And the MAIN reason it reflects poorly on her is because Buchanan is "anti-Israel."

Let's face it folks: Israel can get away with anything it wants. Slobadan Milosevic puts down a little rebellion and NATO smacks Serbia down, but Israel kills hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and we give them our full support.

Just shows you who's got the control.
All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

Israeli police convicted in Palestinian teen's death

JERUSALEM – Two Israeli border policemen have been convicted of manslaughter in the death of a Palestinian teen who was beaten and thrown from a speeding jeep.

The Israeli Justice Ministry says the men face up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Shachar Botbeka, Denis Alhazov and two other officers spent their last day of service in the West Bank city of Hebron in 2002 by going on a rampage, throwing tear gas and stun grenades.

They also seized four Palestinians, hustled them into a jeep and beat them with truncheons and rifles.

Two of the Palestinians were hurled from the vehicle as it moved at a high speed.

Police say one of them, 17-year-old Amran Abu Hamadiya, died after being tossed from the moving jeep after resisting the orders of his tormentors to jump.

Botbeka "pried the deceased's hands" from the straps of the jeep as it travelled at about 80 kilometres an hour and helped to throw him out of the vehicle, Judge Orit Efal-Gabbai of Jerusalem District Court wrote in her ruling.

One of the officers shouted, "He's dead, he's dead," but the police officers "abandoned the deceased and continued on their way," while Alzahov videotaped the incident, she said.

Botbeka and Alhazov initially denied the allegations against them, then acknowledged varying degrees of culpability, according to the ruling.

No date for their sentencing has been set.

The two other border policemen in the case have reached separate plea bargains.

He was being sarcastic. Some people jump to the conclusion that if you criticize Israel you're anti semite.

Unfortunately, in this world of technology, we still haven't figured out how to effectively use sarcasm on the internet.

holy crap...I'll believe it when I see it though. I can tell you right now, some at the top want to pin medals on these guys with admiration If they do get sentencing, it will either be very lenient like a year at most, and it will be a nice stay at a minimum security facility.

    If not....I will be astonished.

  • I know many of you hate Pat Buchanan

    I don't.

I think it is a shame that Pat knows what is up, and feels (apparently) compelled to tell the truth to Americans over the tube half the time or less.

The other half the time he acts like your typical Project Mockingbird spook, spewing whatever "they" want him to say.

    But i don't hate him,
because, like i said, he knows what is going on and makes at least half of an effort to inform the public. Unfortunately with the otherside of his mouth he discredits himself pretty regularly. :(
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

Yeah, he does seem to be pretty informed. He also wrote a good article about the Russia/georgia a few weeks ago. I can't remember if someone posted it here or not.

don't worry, there are still plenty more guys running around with guns:

"Only six per cent of investigations into offences allegedly committed by Israeli soldiers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank yield indictments, an Israeli rights group says."

"The policy was described to me by a local activist as "ethnic cleansing by stealth", with the ultimate aim being to make life so tough for the Palestinians that they hold their hands up in despair and relocate elsewhere. Where they go is of little interest to those holding the reins of Israeli power, so long as it's far enough away for the vacated land to be redistributed to a new generation of settlers."
