just curious how many buildings and properties in our major cities are owned by corporations not in our Country? Pretty soon China and the middle East oil barons are going to own this entire country. I don't mean that in a racist way, as that is how things work in America, you have the cash you can buy it. I mean it more of the lines how this country(USA) is selling its soul to other countries.

Not surprised, just saddened

This is a repeat of 1990... only difference... it was the Japanese who were invading.
Bottom line... I would rather have THEIR money invested in MY home... than MY money in THEIR house.

Saudi royals work closely with the Bush dynasty, not surprised at this.

I agree. I don't appreciate hearing about countries blocking non-citizens from purchasing real estate.

It's a privately owned building, a landmark building, but still private.

If we were giving them the option to run a public operation (like, our ports), I would have a different stance.

I used to see it from my apartment.

    Then I moved home...

I love New York, but I love Seattle more.

I disagree. Take the Chinese for example. They have so much invested in our currency that the minute they decide completely unlink from the US dollar, we are in a lot of trouble.

    i love em both. :)
but being a native, NY will always hold a bigger part of my heart. also, being a design/architecture junkie....hell yea...chrysler building is simply beautiful.

as to the saudis, or anyone, buying US real estate, i agree, private property can and should be sold as the private owner sees fit. not much to do about that without truly stepping on individual rights.

Which was the same thing that was said about the Arabs in the 1970s... and the Japanese in the 1990s. It's Xenophobia.
The Japanese bought the Rockefeller Centre in the 1990s... a big deal was made about it by our politicians, our media and the American people... but, what could they do... move it to Tokyo? Nope. It stayed in New York. Same thing with the Chrysler Building... it ain't going anywhere and not the Saudis will have to pay the maintenence fees on it.

I hear you. I'm a native Seattlite, so we are kind of the opposite. lol :D

And I also agree about private property being sold as the private owner sees fit. My comment about Chinese was merely point out that, from an economical standpoint, I would rather be more invested in foreign countries than have foreign countries invested in my country (and, of course, this is a highly simplified view).

I will agree with you on real estate. They can't take it anywhere.

Also... when the Japanese bought the Pebble Beach Golf Course in Carmel, CA... there was a HUGE stink made about that.
But, they sank millions (of their dollars (yen)) into that place and made tremendous improvements to the grounds and made it a true, world class course. It was exclusive before the sale... and continues to be exclusive... IF... you want to play a round of golf there. But, just driving around the course (like most Americans can only afford to do), it looks much better than it had in the 1980s.

probably not quite as many buildings as there are people getting money from the Farm Bill that live in downtown Manhattan.

The people invested are losing right now because the dollar is in the toilet, they are in the same boat as the rest of us as far as investments go.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

    indeed. :)

and i totally get that point, and overall agree...but without trampling rights, not much to do about it eh? so it is what it is...and i think it's a-ok really.
