"Up to 90 percent of the infant formula sold in the United States may be contaminated with trace amounts of melamine, the toxic chemical linked to kidney damage, according to recent tests. The FDA's test results, which the agency hid from the public and only released after the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act request, showed that Nestle, Mead Johnson and Enfamil infant formula products were all contaminated with melamine.

The AP is also reporting that Abbott Laboratories conducted its own in-house tests that detected trace levels of melamine in its formula products. Together, these infant formula manufacturers make about 90 percent of the infant formula sold in the United States.

Prior to these test results being made public, the FDA had published a document on its website that explained there was no safe level of melamine contamination in infant formula. Specifically, the FDA stated, "FDA is currently unable to establish any level of melamine and melamine-related compounds in infant formula that does not raise public health concerns."

Once tests found melamine in U.S.-made formula products, however, the FDA changed its story. As of today, the FDA has now officially declared melamine to be safe in infant formula as long as the contamination level is less than one part per million (1 ppm).

Astonishingly: The FDA has no new science to justify its abrupt decision declaring melamine to be safe!"

How do they justify melamine getting in the formula in the first place???

One more reason I'm glad my girls never had a single drop of formula in their entire lives.

Breastfeeding. It's a 200,000 year old success story. Actually longer if you include all of the mammals that evolved before us.

  • didn't formula get contaminated a decade or 2 ago and (i think it was) Nestle' sold it to 3rd world countries?

the FDA is fucking useless. When they were researching rbgh a ceo and lawyer from Monsanto stepped down and took positions at the FDA

Hanging them...in America where commerce is king???? I wonder how many people/parents had their children tested after lead poisoning in toys or plastics poison?? If it's on the market it must be safe...wrong.
Both FDA and Consumer Product Safety have dual roles: to facilitate the market then if not to costly protect the public.
Does anyone remember a year or so back when some women in midwest somewhere, put her frozen breast milk for sale online? Media just slammed this chick as if what she was doing was mad..evil. For centuries families hired wet nurses for their children. It may be a good time to seek out a wet nurse rather than trust a bunch of bozos w/ the safety of babies.
I really loved breast feeding for all the"good" reasons but also b/c it was interesting to see how uncomfortable some people were w/the"realness" of it. We had some friends or people over and I was getting quite bored w/ them and I gave one, boob, a squeeze and it actually shot across the room and into the face of my then husband. We laughed so hard and this couple looked ashen. I thought this lady was going to faint. They left.

    peace
