"A delegation of senior physicians has been barred from entering the Gaza Strip to provide medical care to Palestinians in need of treatment.

The doctors are all Israeli Arabs and were heading to the strip on behalf Physicians for Human Rights.

PHR told The Media Line the delegation deliberately did not include any Jewish members, because they faced risks and were not allowed to enter Gaza for security reasons. The organization deplored what it called an unacceptable discrimination between Arab and Jewish doctors.

The delegation was initially given permission to enter but was informed by the Israeli army that it could not enter the strip, while they were on their way there.

The organization had collected medical equipment and planned to give medical treatment to Palestinians who have not received permits to leave the strip.

The delegation includes a surgeon, an oncologist, a psychologist, a social worker and orthopedists and planned to carry out medical procedures and offer advice to doctors at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and the European Hospital in Khan Younis.

In some cases the medical staff in Gaza does not have the skills and knowledge to treat certain patients and the Israeli doctors were going there to provide assistance.

This would have been PHR's fourth delegation to the Gaza Strip this year.

PHR maintains the closure on Gaza is damaging the function of the hospitals and constitutes a collective punishment on the people of Gaza.

The doctors chose to go on Wednesday morning, the eve of Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement, because it is a national holiday in Israel so they would not be needed in their work place.

Yom Kippur begins on Wednesday and ends of Thursday night. In Israel it is not only marked by a day of fasting and prayer but also by intense security.

Palestinians are prevented from traveling from the West Bank into Israeli towns and cities and the military, border police and regular police significantly increase their overt and covert presence.

The Israeli army told The Media Line it was still investigating the case."
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.
