"A jury in Quebec has acquitted a man of first-degree murder in the deadly shooting of a Laval police officer who raided his home last year.

He was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Const. Daniel Tessier, who died after being shot three times last spring after he entered Parasiris's Brossard home with a battering ram during a botched drug raid.

The verdict means the jury believed Parasiris's self-defence argument was enough to raise a reasonable doubt about the charges.

The father of two insisted he believed his family was being attacked by home invaders when a police team swarmed their house on March 2, 2007.

Believing the invaders were going to harm him, his wife and his children, Parasiris testified he had no choice but to shoot."

This doesn't seem to be too far out of the realm of things, self defense in this case surely raises reasonable doubt. If this happened in America I don't think he would've survived, I'm not sure how he survived this incident in Canada.

I heard about this story on the news and it made me wonder how much more evidence the jury heard then was actually reported on. I mean I think it is pretty standard procedure for police to announce who they are and that they have a warrant when they bust down the door. It would seem to me that if it went down like that if you start shooting it would be hard to call it self defense, which makes me wonder what else there is to this story.

It's not a guarantee that you're going to hear them mutter something clearly through a closed door.

If someone yelled something at my front door I would barely hear it. For sure I wouldn't be able to make out the words unless I was right at the front door. It might raise my attention though. Once the smashing starts, it's on. Whomever is coming in is kinda screwed at that point unless they come in blazing bullets in all directions

This has happened a number of times in the US, so I'm not sure why you've missed it. That is why the police have adopted policies where they clearly have to announce themselves before the door is rammed or they enter into someone's premises. You can't fault a home owner who is simply defending his home from intruders.

He would have died on the scene instantly after shooting an officer if he lived int he USA. It's an unspoken rule. Kill one of ours and we will you type thing.
