Sep 11 - Russia tests what it says is the world's most powerful vacuum bomb.

It is an explosive device that unleashes a shockwave with the power of a nuclear weapon.

    Some very interesting overt military news coming out of Russia the last couple of weeks.....resumed bomber flights.....even ones that feint at international borders...this new bomb....and I read an interesting article in yesterday's NY Times (too bad their so tight with their on-line content) regarding commercial flights into Chechnya. It seems that the war there is either won, under control or restricted to the hinterlands. Some of this Russian activity could be related to no longer needing the forces to man that area.

    It's a thermobaric bomb.

    A thermobaric weapon works by first dispersing a cloud of powder or liquid explosive using a small charge, then igniting it with a second charge.

    The weapon consists of a container of either a volatile liquid or a finely powdered solid, which could be an explosive or metal powder, and two separate explosive charges.

    The weapon is initiated upon dropping or firing, and the first explosive charge (or some other dispersal mechanism) bursts open the container at a predetermined height and disperses the fuel in a cloud that mixes with atmospheric oxygen. Once the fuel is appropriately mixed, the second charge detonates, propagating an explosion (blast wave) through the cloud.

    Newer types of thermobaric weapons do not disperse the fuel before igniting it, but are single-stage bombs having one explosive charge that both ignites and disperses the fuel.

    Similar to the fuel-air bombs that we use....just different types of agents, eh?

    Fuel-air, thermobaric, vaccum bomb... All one in the same for the most part.

    That powdered metal can be some nasty stuff.......it can com bust, and the fire has to put out with salt or graphite.

    Russia also dissolved Parliament today and another of Putin's cronies was named PM. Also the event last week of them being chased by scrambling UK and Danish warplanes does not speak of cooperation and responsible government.

    Not convinced that the Russia & China thing will a long and meaningful relationship....their interests conflict way too much in Central Asia.
