Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

Not being a Mormon I am not sure if it is accurate but all stories of creation are pretty strange if you step back and look at them. But they basically all have the same root meaning that God created man and the universe.

Agreed. I don't know why this story is any stranger than the one in Genesis. Or how Joseph Smith is any different that the Pope du jour.

  • The ironic part to me is that it seems like when a good Mormon dies he gets his own planet somewhere with a bunch of wives.

They also think the bible isn't good enough, so the had to write their own book (book of Mormons)to make the bible "better"

I've never really looked into Mormonism, but it sounds like a cult to me.

Romney is doing fairly well in the polls. What comes after Bush? A cult leader?

    omg....run for your lives! :p:D

What is a cult? Depending on your definition, I might agree with you, but would lump Catholics in there too. Same with Scientologists, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Muslims, etc...

As far as writing their own bible, isn't that what the Christians did with the New Testament, and the Muslims did with the Koran?

And native american stories are often even more wacky than these, with talking animals. And what about the ancient Greeks with their crazy mythologies?

I guess it all sounds pretty far fetched to me, so I don't really get the distinction you're going for.

I agree, it's hard to pick a point of reference to make a comparison on what is what. I guess anything newer than the new testament, seems overtly cultish to me.

No, but you cite him and his 'theories' as credible.

I think there's difference of wanting to be president and holding those beliefs with someone who just has a theory.

    Don't you?

  • I was raised Mormon, most of the cartoon is essentially in line with what I remember being told as a child, with the exception of the Kolob (sp/name?) part & the explanation of negroes. The Kolob part I never heard, and if memory serves me correctly, the negro explanation was the "mark of Cain" line of thought.

But yeah, I do remember my mother & grandmother telling me as a child that the Heavenly Father was once corporeal and that I would also attain godhood if I lived according to the church doctrines.

My best friend is a Mormon and it is in no way a cult. Now he will admit there are extremists in his religion just like any other religion that main stream Mormons don't particularly care for. They do have beliefs that are not normal to you and I but again their basic belief is very similar to other religions. Treat others as you would like to be treated, respect life and worship God.

Why are those (Mormon) beliefs any more or less fucked up than believeing that you are eating someone's body and drinking thier blood at Catholic mass?

I agree. Transmogrification is freaky to me. Does that make Catholics cannibals?

One is a little more "out there" Mormonism is kinda like the boring version of Scientology.

At least the bible sticks to planet earth.

  • There's a very interesting non-fiction book on the Mormon Faith called: Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith" written by Jon Krakauer. I read it for a bookclub I'm in and it is a very eye-opening read. The book opens with the murder of a mother and child committed by Ron and Dan Lafferty, who belong to the Fundamentalist sect of Mormonism. The book is all about how the Mormon Faith started, why it took off (it's one of the fastest growing religions today) and how the faith split into the Latter Day Saints and the Fundamentalists. A very chilling scene in the book is the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which has been recently been made into movie. Forget that cartoon. Read about that.

Jon Krakauer also wrote "Into Thin Air" and the book called "Into The Wild", the movie Sean Penn just made that Eddie Vedder just scored the soundtrack.
