I'm still trying to figure out if this is really trying to say Japanese chimps are smarter than American college students :p

"NEW YORK — Think you're smarter than a fifth-grader? How about a 5-year-old chimp? Japanese researchers pitted young chimps against human adults in tests of short-term memory, and overall, the chimps won.

That challenges the belief of many people, including many scientists, that "humans are superior to chimpanzees in all cognitive functions," said researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa of Kyoto University.

"No one can imagine that chimpanzees _ young chimpanzees at the age of 5 _ have a better performance in a memory task than humans," he said in a statement."

  • I just watched that chimp on TV. He really seems to have a good memory and sequencing covered numbers successfully than the Japanese students (ehe, yeah he was competing against Japanese students so no offense for American college students here).
the success rate of the chimp was %80 while %40 for the students.
Some more thinking about "intelligent design" now, eh? hey who knows, maybe they have similar societies with all the traditions, beliefs and religion. They might be even waiting for a chimp Jesus to return back and save them.

Chimp Jesus...ahaa. Yeah and in 10-15 years we find out chimps actually carry out highly complex conversations using various degrees of telekinesis and esp, as do most other mammals and humans are the only ones that actually have to use audible words (and they're all laughing at us) !!!

  • Hmm possible, but actually audible words and telekinesis, esp are not the only form of communication, are they? All the animals are probably communicating very well between themselves with their screams, gurklings, grownings etc.
And I am sure they are not laughing at us but only fearing from us.
In the end we are the only species on planet earth carnivoring other species with a good glass of wine and asking the waiter to serve it well done, medium well or whatever.
In douglas adams' novel "the restaurant at the end of universe" there was a very good scene involving the main characters of the book and a cow.
these guys together with Zaphod goes to the restaurant to eat something and to watch the end of the universe and instead of a waiter, a cow comes to take the orders and advising the guys the best parts of itself to be grilled and then goes inside the kitchen to be slaughtered. ehe, of course the humans gets sick and don't order any meat while Zaphod is surprised and asking if it is more acceptable for them to eat meat from a cow that is slaughtered without its consent or a cow that is totally aware that it will be slaughtered and offers its best parts to the guests. Great sarcasm there.
But you should read the book as I probably screwed it while writing.

I doubt most scientists believe that.

Depending on the memory tasks, the structures are the same. Mice are really good at manuevering mazes and remembering how to get through them. It's because they have a hippocampus, lesion that and they are instantly and forever lost. Humans and Chimps are no different.
