American obesity may have peaked

Is peak fat linked to peak oil, or the skinny dollar?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/30/wobese130.xml

"Adult obesity among Americans appears to have reached a limit after 25 years of successive increases, say government health officials.

American obesity may have peaked. Only 65% of obese people said they were ever told that they were overweight

While more than a third of adult Americans - about 72?million - still qualify as obese, the number is no longer rising, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention."
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

One would think the obesity rate would have to plateau at some time. One would wish it would have been long ago.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

Keep on rockin in the free world!!!!

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.

Another one? I'm surprised nobody chimed in about how these fat, obese people are a generation away from the one's that won WWII all by themselves!

Now we can start tossing off. You don't have the major leaguers hit off tees for a reason.

  • At some point the death rates will catch up and smooth out the cellulite.

Excess fat is so nasty, and 1/3 of the population is ridiculously high. Learn what to eat, and how to get into shape....and do it. It's that simple. Anyone with a computer and a few hours, or access to a doctor, can be educated how to be healthy.

    I just don't get it.

That is just the thing....not everyone in america has access to a computer, a doctor and a few hours to spare.
Fast food is cheaper than vegetables.
    And quicker.
And doesn't need to be cooked.

I've heard that a couple of times now as produce being more expensive. I find it the exact opposite. Fast food is pretty expensive compared to grocery store produce from my experience, certainly not more expensive. Any local library has an internet connection, and then there's word of mouth, or just going for a walk, doing pushups, or situps all free and easy if the mind is willing.

Listen I agree with you. I had to end that post quick..sorry
What I typed is the rationalization of the ignorant.
I lived in Brooklyn for a while and worked downtown. The population that frequented where I worked was not an upscale clientele to say the least. The obesity rate amongst the people I worked with and for was ridiculous. These people lived off mcdonalds
In a city situation with alot of poverty or well below the median income of our country, fast food seems to them the only option.
It sounds good on paper, what you are saying. But reality is, it is more difficult than you think. (not for me..I am perfect, of course. lol)

When did obesity become a problem? What's wrong with fat people?
  • Its cheap, plentiful and legal, not to mention the strongest natural urge people have. Of course its an epidemic. why wouldnt it be? Before now, the majority of people have never had to fight the urge to eat. They even have epidemics in China and part of the Middle East now.

fast food is definately cheaper than most groceries nowadays, not to mention quicker and easier, which helps when you are as overworked and stressed as many people are nowadys. I could buy a pack of buns, ground beef, cheese, condiments, etc. for lots of money or i could just goto mcdonald's and get a double cheeseburger for a buck. But thank God i dont eat that crap anymore.

Overeating is a vice like any other. some people are alcoholics, some smoke, some shoot up, some eat too much. Only you can't stop cold turkey and it snowballs the fatter you get.

besides it being really hard to get laid? :)

it doesnt really affect me, so i dont care what other people do with their own bodies. I suppose it does weigh down the health system, but so does everything else that feels good! I'm not really a big fan of this recent trend of trying to regulate everything like smoking and fast food because it costs taxpayer dollars to keep them alive. i think thats mostly bullshit anyway.

As for myself, I've been fat and not fat, and being skinny is about 4000000 times better for all kinds of reasons.

    haha.

true. I've never been very big, I've tried but I just cant' afford to be fat. Just another person. There shouldn't be this big focus on it. Media has turned it into an issue when it shouldn't be. If they gave a shit they would air porgrams about the health risks of being obese, as opposed to pointing the finger at all the fat people.

i think you are right about that.
  • Being significantly overweight is linked to all kinds of health issues. Cancer, heart disease, and diabetes are the big ones. Being fat is one thing, but it's also a lot to do about what kinds of food you're eating to get (and maintain) that level of fat. If you eat a clean whole food diet you will not be obese unless you have a serious overeating problem where you obsessive compulsively have to be jamming food in your mouth like rocking in a corner, or fidgeting with something constantly. A lot of people discriminate against it as it is seen as two things: lack of self control, and laziness. Right or wrong, in most cases this is the hard truth.

It is more difficult to eat healthy, and that is a significant problem in society. Food choice availability on the go is extremely lacking, however it has a lot to do with our culture and always wanting to press the easy button and tune out. People don't want to take 30 mins to prepare a good meal for themselves to be healthy, yet they are perfectly content to sit on the couch for hours on end doing absolutely nothing just staring at the tube. It's the mindset that is broken. people need to take first priority on what goes inside them, as ultimately you really do become what you consume in every sense of the word. My rule of thumb is if food doesn't resemble the way it appears in it's natural (it's original state) it isn't really fit for consumption. Even then it should be organic. Corporations are preying on, and selling out peoples lives for a buck.
