Poster Question

I have my Dusseldorf all rolled up and still in the tube it was shipped to me in..

I was hoping to get it framed this week, but it looks like that will be pushed to next..

Should I NOT leave the poster in the tube? Should I [somehow] flattened it out until I bring it to the framers? [I would roll it back up and take it to the framers in the tube, just to make sure its safe]..

Does it even matter?

??

Thanks in advance.

never leave them in the tube. flatten them as soon as they arrive. if you don't they get roll bends, which would be fine if they were perfectly round like the tube, but they aren't. they become big, unflattenable waves every few inches from the top to the bottom of the poster, each the entire width of the poster.

    always flatten. always.

Personally I'd leave it in the tube. The only reason I flattened out my posters was because I can't see myself getting them framed for a while. If it's only for 2 weeks then it won't matter all that much. That's only my personal opinion though

I would take it out and look at it. If it's on;y gonna be one more week, I seriously doubt it will be any more damaged (if any) than it is now.

I use one of these for my unframed posters:

Just put them in there, put a sheet of acid-free craft paper in between each poster and close it up. If you need to flatten them out, just put soemthing heavy on top of them. I usually just put a couple of pairs of jeans on top of the board and it does the trick

This is a VERY cheap way to store posters and it does the the trick :)

  • Thanks for the info so far..

I have taken a look at it, its looks absolutely incredible...my concern is taking it out, and then it somehow gets ruined by not being totally protected..

It has been in the Tube now for about 2 weeks..the week it took to ship, and the week since..

If all you experts are telling me to flatten it, then I will as soon as i get home...

Now the problem is where do I store it...hmm...fuck it, maybe I will just get it done tomorrow..

fuck you guys got me worried a little now..

has this happened to anyone else?

or know of anyone that this has happened to?

    this would be heart breaking...

A few weeks is fine, and the framer will have tools to flatten it easier. What you don't want to do is leave it in the tube for months or years. :)

  • ahh

yeah, that will never happen.. :)

I didnt spend the money to have it sitting in cardboard...especially with how nice this print is..

It's not like they charge you extra for flattening though
  • when you get it framed post pics of what you did. my dusseldorf A/P is next in line for the framers.

most of the advice id give has already been given but id add that a ITOYA EVOLUTION PROFOLIO 18x24 is what i use to store a lot of my prints and i love it. you can search for it and it shouldnt be above $40

its called a "PROFOLIO" and a "PORTFOLIO" either way the EVOLUTION model is the best one.

  • I think everyone gets a little too sensitive about the posters around here. The reality is that a few weeks(or months for that matter) in the tube isn't going to do any damage visible to the naked eye. You're much more likely to damage it taking it out and fucking around with it. It doesn't make a bit of difference to the framer if it was in the tube or not, and once its in a frame it will look just like it was never rolled at all. Just get it framed sooner rather than later and don't buy posters with the intention of long term storage, because in reality those will probably never get framed. Most of these posters are too nice to be sitting in cardboard or between craft paper anyway...

  • thank you everyone!

I said "fuck it dude, lets go bowling...I mean to the framers"

I am taking it to the framers tomorrow.

As much as this has not been in a tube for very long, I feel it has been long enough.

southerngarden, as soon as I get it back, Ill post or pm you some pics..The plan going in is, to put black matting around it, and frame it in a black frame..should come out sick ass...

thanks again everyone..knowledge gained, for sure! :)
  • thanks to D i bought one of THESE

so i can still enjoy looking at them while being stored flat and protected from harm!

and it comes in 24x36" so you can even use it for Ames prints!!
  • those are pretty cool...

before the page opened, i thought maybe it was one of those big displays you see in record stores that you flip through that can hold like 50 posters...that would be pretty bad ass..[also pretty stupid looking sitting in your living room..haha..]

  • It is best to store posters flat but, if your taking it to get framed just leave it in the tube. Whats another week or two? Here is what I did with my Dusseldorf

  • that looks awesome dude!

mine will be pretty much the same, but without the detailed border around the 'over the line' parts of the print..

good job! I cant wait to get this done!
  • that is sweet...i dig how the sig is visible. how much did the custom border like that cost? where did you have it done? its really nice

No they wont. But it makes it a helluva alot easier for them. It also gives them a flat piece to work with, that makes it much easier to measure. Rolled prints tend to creep if they are framed when not flattened.

I also bought the 24x36" case with 2 refills because of D advice. Bought it yesterday and can't wait to get it.

I flatten out all my posters and when the case arrives I'm going to put them inside!!

I got it done by a friend of mine who works at Michaels, he does all my prints. He carged me a little over $120.00 to do this one. He gets all his materials at cost.
