"Sen. Barack Obama's former preacher has delivered some controversial sermons in which he said the US invited the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and he has said African Americans should sing "God damn America" instead of God bless America.

ABC News has reviewed dozens of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's sermons, and the network aired some of his most inflammatory rhetoric in a segment Thursday on Good Morning America. Wright was Obama's pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago for the last two decades, until his retirement earlier this year.

The Democratic presidential candidate credited Wright for the title of his book, "The Audacity of Hope," and Wright performed Obama's marriage and baptized his two daughters. But Obama has described the preacher as "like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with."

The latest statements unearthed by ABC, which reviewed videos of the sermons the church offers for sale, could cause more headaches for Obama during a campaign in which supporters' comments have increasingly drawn scrutiny.

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," Wright said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.""

Obama cannot control what his pastor says. But, Obama could control what church he went to. The remarks seem a bit over the top to me, although they are not as inflammatory once read in context. But, they're still over the top in my opinion.

If I were black, I'd be pissed by that statement. it implies that blacks are too stupid and lack any will power to do anything other than use or sell drugs and fall into a life of crime and imprisonment. Obama should distance himself from this brainiac not only because he may be a racist, but also because he seems to be a complete moron. if this guy's able to bring in a sizable congregation, that's further proof that people in America are sheep.
  • Obama just can't explain this away with a speech

Anyone out there been to a pearl jam concert? If so than you MUST believe in everything ed says or you wouldn't be there, right?

Do YOU want to run for president and be judged based on the people you know?

    they're really getting desperate.

C'mon. There's a huge difference between going to a concert and sitting in a pew for 20 years, listening to a guy spew this crap, and then calling him a "spiritual advisor."

I don't claim that Ed "advises" me or has ever "advised" me on anything. If Obama found these comments as distasteful as he now claims (because it's become politically necessary, of course) he never would have sat there for 20 years. He would have left the church.

I know people who have left churches because they find the preacher boring. If someone continually preaches things that run counter to your beliefs, you leave the damn church. It happens all the time.

All I can gather, Obama believes a lot of the shit, too. It's the only conclusion I can logically draw. It's more logical than, "You know, this guy offends the hell out of me. He's divisive and conspiratorial and probably crazy. But I think I'll ride it out another 20 years, see what happens."

This may or may not hurt Obama in long run. But dammit, it should. And it does for me. I can't stomach the thought of this guy as my president.

Oh, yes god forbid we might have a religious fanatic in the white house!

    wait a minute..

so are you voting for Billary, McWar, or "none of the above" that insures one of them will win?

Are you Holding Mcwar to the same satandard with Hagee and Parsley as religious advisors?
  • It's hard to explain away a bigotted, racist Preacher as your Mentor, isn't it?

It's ok Obama, we know one of your eloquent speeches can fix this (not)

An interesting read about at least one portion of Pastor Wright's comments when taken in context.

Apparently, so does the news media. ;) Roland Martin is about the only guy on CNN worth a shit.
