World's largest freshwater lake is heating up and shrinking

Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake, has been shrinking for years—and now it appears to be getting hotter.

Beach goers at the lake, which is bounded by Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ontario, Canada, must walk up to 300 feet (100 yards) farther to reach shorelines. Some docks are unusable because of low water, and once-submerged lake edges now grow tangles of tall wetland plants.

this is because of global warming right?
  • If siphoning of water isn't already being done, you have to wonder how much longer it will be before it DOES happen. I've read article after article abpout the U.S. West being dry. Other places like Alabama are in dire need of water as well.

I would suspect that the drought mentioned in the article could be related to global warming...there's always the "use" factor, as in how much water is being taken from the lake for human use....there's also the St. Lawrence Seaway factor...it could be that more water is flowing out of the lake due to the seaway, and this combined with drought/global warming factors is changing the lake.

It's probably from all the cottagers bar-b-queing excessively. That or excessive toilet flushing. Maybe the fish are just extra thirsty.

All I can say is in the past 10+ years I've never had the grass go brown in my back yard. This year...whoa...she's bone dry...

I worked down in South Florida for 6 months and visited Lake Okeechobee (that big lake in the middle of Florida. It was so dry on parts of the the lake it caught on fire and burned for days because of a severe drought. Could this global warming's cause and effect the answer it's possible but it's sad cause this ais a major water source for South Florida.

On NPR (National Public Radio) they spoke on their series on water. The water subject matter was Florida and Lake Okeechobee and Florida Faces Vanishing Water Supply. Then click on LISTEN and you'll hear much more on Lake Okeechobee and the drought that hit that state.

Also here's more on other NPR's stories on WATER.
