Damn!! I was just getting all excited Roland and getting all prepared to be out and watching and I read this at the bottom of the page:

"Named because they appear to originate from Perseus, the Perseid shower is mostly visible from the Northern Hemisphere.

Southern countries such as Australia rarely see any Perseid meteors."

I hope you get a really good look at it though. :)

I feel for ya...I got this exact same thing once but for the southern hemisphere, so I can relate.

I love this stuff... I saw the most excellent northern lights ever about 8 years ago Can't begin to explain how incredible it was, other than it was like a Pink Floyd smoke show across the entire sky as far as the eye could see...straight up and every where. Immediately above was a 50/50 red an blue coronal halo that persisted until the very end. I actually got the impression that the planet was getting bathed in a solar shower. Hard to explain but you could make out each solar "wash" as it came on....over and over and again. It lasted about 2 1/2 hours in varying intensity.

If I had a camera it would have been International archive footage without question.

I've seen quite a few northern lights before but never like this one...not even close. I actually went around to my neighbors on either side at 3am to wake them up just to see it...it was that crazy.....nothing about it on the news...can't find any mention of it on the internet, and I know we all didn't hallucinate. We were all thoroughly freaked out.

I wanted to wake up the entire neighborhood. Someone else down the way kept honking their car horn.

The entire sky was like a fast moving glowing cartoon color show everywhere. I went and sat up on my roof in complete and utter awe. If I only had a video camera.

Once in a lifetime event...so needless to say I'm a little hooked on gazing upwards when something strange this way comes...

That sounds AWESOME roland!! :) I love to watch the sky and I especially love when they tell us there's going to be something special to see, not that there isn't normally lots to look at!
Think the last exciting thing here was McNaught's Comet, but we haven't had a meteor shower here for a while that I know of. I usually get a tip off from my Nan, she's a bit of an amateur astronomer. The thing I'd most like to see is Aurora Australis or the Southern Aurora and of course I've always wanted to see Aurora Borealis, but I guess you've got a better chance of catching that. :)
I was so lucky to see the 22d halo around the moon in May this year. So amazing!

I should probably sign up to the Sciencework astronomy site but I don't really know enough. I really just want the updates and not have to talk too much and show my ignorance! :D

I was just outside and i saw two (it was kinda hard cause there's some cloud cover moving in) before the mosquitos biting my legs and getting dizzy from looking straight up chased me inside. my neighbors probably think that i'm insane standing outside in my nighty....not that i give a rat's butt.

i hope that they're easier to see tomorrow or the next night cause i love meteor showers. i've been know to drag my kids out of bed at 2am to sit on a dark frozen field when it was 20 degreees outside in the winter to watch a meteor shower...that was like 6 years ago and i'm pretty sure that they still haven't forgiven me for it...ha

  • I just went out for about 20 mins and saw two. The first one was directly overhead, thick, very long, and had sparks trailing after it. On a scale of 1 - 10 it was definitely a 9.. It actually made me say holy shit out loud. The other one was closer to the horizon normal looking and brief.

There's no moon and the sky is perfectly clear and quite dark.

I hope this is a sample of what's to come. If so, I'm heading up to the torrance barrens dark sky reserve in Bala this weekend. that place is almost 360 panorama and almost zero light pollution.

    excellent first impression.

:D hehe! Aaah! Be good for em pris! That's the kinda stuff parents are supposed to torture their kids with! ;) And as for the neighbour's they can mind their own beeswax too! I'm always out there staring up at the sky in my jimmy jams and like you I don't care what they think!

It's actually fairly intense. I'm out at camp and I saw about 20 in a half an hour. Nothing too big yet though.

  • I took my mom and my kids out in the country to watch it and didnt see a thing.. I think its way too cloudy. I can barely even see any stars.

LOL Prism, I do the same thing....wake the kids up to see things like meteors and comets, run around in jammies! LOL one year, I ran out in my tshirt and underware with a baby in tow just to see...I believe it was like 2am-ish, thinking no one else would be out...WRONG! As I'm dancing through the back yard with my daughter, there is my neighbor sitting on his back patio.."HI, great night for a show eh"? I wasn't sure if he was talking about my antics or the meteors. I never asked! :D

  • Well the first 5 mins on Friday was the best I got to see. The closest thing yet to the fireball in the sky I saw a while back.

    Saturday was overcast....a bust.

    Sunday is clear but...nada!

I remember catching it back in 1992 or 93 where it took me totally by surprise looking up...so I zipped down to the local park...laid myself back on a picnic table...gazed up in the muggy heat, and got one hell of a show. The ooo's and ahhh's from every around me explains it best.

I'm going out to give it one last look...

  • Ok I just went out for about 15 mins and caught 5.

Aside from one, they were all thin little streakers and short lived...(heh that sounds funny). Anyhow the thicker one was off to the eastern horizon, but too short to hold my interest. Laying back on something really helps with the sore neck thing.

I got spoiled first thing on Friday. I didn't give it much time thinking Saturday, Sunday would be better.

    well...there's always next year?! hehe

:) Well it's still pretty exciting though Roland. That you got to see them at all.
Guess the old carpe diem is the rule of thumb when it comes to meteor watching! ;)

Don't you just wish you had a you beaut camera that could photograph them?
I'm always wishing my camera did great things when I see things in the night sky. So inspiring and so frustrating trying to capture them with the old Kodak. :o

    So were they colored? :)

I want to get a video camera with one of those fish eye lenses so I can mount it on a tripod and do some time lapse stuff.

Nothing colored tonight just regular star color. I keep forgetting to check out the what's up tonight in the astrology sites ( http://www.astrowhatsup.com/ ) is one of a few out there. There's a much better one that I usually go to.

I normally get to it through a program called Starry night pro: http://www.starrynight.com/new_snprox.html there's an option in the program called "what's on tonight". Awesome program....10+ out of 10, I just redid my computer so it's not installed yet.

Ah! Thanks for all that! :)
That video camera on tripod sounds very cool Roland! And certainly worth the investment if you are passionate about it. :)

I usually go to the Planetarium website here if I want info, they have some really neat stuff and the Planetarium itself is a great night out. They have special chairs you can lay back in and everything. They're like recliners. Very comfy! I also like the Astronomy Victoria site. It's very cool, with lots of stuff organized and things to see. :)

Anyway, I'm just really glad you got to see stuff. All I got for my efforts the other night was wet slippers and rain in my eye! :D

I didn't see squat! I only sat for 1/2hour and there were clouds here and there. I came home and listened to the Perseids on my computer instead!

I love this stuff. I still remember that comet in 1996-1997? I took my binoculars outside to see it. I'll keep a look out this evening for any meteors.

I'm not too sure if I'll get to see them here, although Korea is fairly north. Although it's just started pissing down so maybe that'll put paid to any star gazing for tonight.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck in the city & won't see a thing, damnit! I did catch the show once many years ago in CO. It was fantastic! I was out near the Dolores River camping & stayed up all night. There were so many....just gorgeous! Quite something to see if you can get away from the city lights.
