The Arctic, known better for its polar bears and melting sea ice than its fossil fuels, may soon become a hot spot for oil—spurring an international rush to stake claims on the seafloor.
The Arctic Ocean's seabed may hold billions of gallons of oil and natural gas—up to 25 percent of the world's undiscovered reserves, according to U.S. Geological Survey estimates—leading some experts to call the region the next Saudi Arabia.

Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

global warming is being allowed to happen to access the massive natural resources trapped under the ice
it is blatant, and obvious. IMO
Sweet Mother Of Pearl!
continuing and deep set of serious environmental hazards?
YOU THINK !?!
OMFG.
If I opened it now would you not understand?
There will come a time when people will say...yeah when I was a young lad, we used to eat things from the ocean all the time.

This whole issue about spent nuclear material is frightening. It'll be around for thousands of years, yet we humans are dumping it like its organic waste or somethign. You know what(?), humans are fucked. We're so fucking stupid its sickening.

You know whats really amazing, and disheartening, is that there are still sufficient oil reserves left in the world for another 75-100 yrs. or more. Do we really want to use oil for the next 100 years ? I don't think so, unless we truly want to kill ourselves with pollution. But it looks like we're gonna do it.
It may be worse than that actually. The more efficient our technology is the more oil we have access to. We are currently drilling for oil in places that were inaccessible in the 60's and chances are that in 60 years from now we will be drilling for oil in places that are inaccessible to us right now (like the artic, because of all that damn useless ice).
I agree...but here is the geopolitical problem with oil.
There is just too many money in the business of oil to divest the US from foreign oil. The US needs to control the majority of oil the oil flow so that they can have the ultimate say in the region...instead of China or Russia etc... (the Saudi's alone have close to 1trillion invested in Wall Street - the US economy would sink in one week without them).
Anyway - I believe the reason we will never see an administration with the guts to pursue alternative energy would be our diminishing influence (i.e. control) over the region. He who controls the oil flow controls the world (at least financially). We have much too much of our economy tied into the lunatics in the middle east. But, since money trumps all else, we can't cede that control to another nation lest we lose our global dominance.
And of course this doesn't even get into the question of the industry bakrolling presidential candidates and these candidated offering sweetheart US energy policies Quid Pro Quo.
