NEW YORK (CNN) — John McCain's presidential campaign is making an 11th hour appeal to Cuban Americans in Florida with a robo-call that says Barack Obama would pursue "political policies like those of Cuba."

The automated Spanish-language telephone calls began late this afternoon into Cuban households, particularly in and around the southern part of the state, and quote a Reuters story that says former Cuban leader Fidel Castro prefers Obama win the presidency.

McCain and Obama are in a fierce battle for Florida's 27 electoral votes.

Translated script:

Urgent: I am calling on behalf of John McCain to tell you that today at 1:28 this afternoon the independent news organization of Reuters reported that the Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro, has given his support to Democrat Barack Obama for being smarter and more sophisticated than John McCain. Just like Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, and Evo Morales - the brothers of Castro prefer Barack Obama. Don't give Castro what he wants. Go vote right now for John McCain and avoid establishing in the United States political policies like those of Cuba. There are only a few hours left today to vote for John McCain. This call has been paid for by McCain/Palin 2008.

    And I heard the retarded radio DJ's on the Spanish stations today get all up on "the news" and they repeated it over and over and over again on the radio.
    And there was all these cubans calling in the show hating and telling Senator Obama to go move to Cuba... it was ridiculous.
    And I have nothing against Cubans I live in Miami and all my inlaw family is cuban (hubby 1/2 Cuban) :D
    Unfortunately that type of tactic appeals to the less educated easily scared Cuban populations in South Florida, my husband's family has been registered Republican forever though last election and this election they chose to swing the other way.

    I haven't talked to my parents yet tonight, I wonder if they got a call too. you and I both know how Cubans are in Miami are, especially the older ones. being Cuban myself, I see it in my own family. luckily us young ones keep our family straight :) those Cubans sure can be tough to reason with, pretty hard-headed ;)

    I think it is just this kind of behavior that will give the election to Obama. Robocalls like that just say, "I think you're so stupid, you'll believe anything." That's not an excellent way to get people to vote for you. By dissing them. The Republicans need new political strategists, because McCain's strategy has been lying, lying, and insulting people. That's gonna win him just what he's gonna get.

    My husband is half cuban, I'm not cuban myself but my father in law is and just pretty much all my in-law family is... LOL!
