Ron Paul Beats McCain in Maine Caucus, Primed to Win Over 1/3 of State Delegates

In the race for delegates, Ron Paul appears to closely trail Romney for first place

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 4, 2008

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – While most reports about this past weekend’s Maine Caucus focused on the purely symbolic presidential preference poll, in the meaningful race to secure delegates to the state convention Ron Paul is primed to finish second with likely 35 percent of the total delegates.

Delegates to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis are elected by the state delegates. Internal results from 10 of 16 counties, including the largest cities of Portland, South Portland, Lewiston, Auburn, Augusta, Waterville, Bangor, and Brewer, show Ron Paul picking up 215 of 608 State Convention delegates so far reported, or 35%.

“Ron Paul’s strong second place finish in Maine, in which he beat John McCain, is proof that this race is far from over,” said Ron Paul campaign manager Lew Moore. “We’ll continue to battle for every delegate in this wide-open race for the Republican nomination.”

In the presidential preference poll, with 70 percent reporting, Ron Paul is in third place just two percentage points behind John McCain. However, the Maine preference poll is purely a beauty contest, and in the actual election of state delegates the so-called “frontrunner” McCain is far behind Ron Paul.

What the hell? Why doesn't the real media see it this way? It makes sense to me but wtf do I know?

Can someone, who is unbiased either way, tell me how in fuck this bullshit is all supposed to work.

I just found out that the neighbording state of WA (where PJ lives), has BOTH a caucus and a primary for both parties, each of which disseminates delegates? How in the fucking bullshit?

I need to get more educated....

  • Really? Nothing? lol... wow

What a sham our political system is.

  • In Washington, the Democrats dole out their delegates based upon the caucus. We also get to vote in the primary, but basically our votes in the primary are worthless because the caucus is how the delegates are chosen. I read something in the paper the other day that said that it is still important to vote because the Democratic party reserves the right to put the delegates out how they see fit based upon the majority.

Confused? Join the club. And I live here. Its fucked up.

I'm not sure how the Republicans do it because I'm not one of them.
  • Well, I found this great video on how the Republican Convention/Delegates work.

I'm sure the Democratic Convention is real similar. I'm not 100% on that though.

not that i'm a republican, but in Washington the republicans choose their delegates half by caucus and half by primary results.

this Sat. I'll be at my caucus. hopefully I'll learn a few things, or at least be less confsued about the delegate process in this state

Good. One thing that I hope people don't do is fold under pressure, and switch candidates. Whether you be a Ron Paul or Barack Obama supporter.

John Mcain supporters can sleep in a ditch when it's raining.... jk.. sorta.

appears to be more of the RP camp grasping at straws

perhaps because this fails to mention in Maine for the republicans it is winner-takes-all. meaning that all 18 republican delegates to the republican National convention go to Romney, they don't get split.

each party in each state gets to decide how it's delegates are chosen

    I don't think so... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine_Republican_caucuses%2C_2008

    and

Key phrase in the last article....
The Maine Republican Party rules, however, do not bind state convention delegates to support a particular candidate. This means that the vote of presidential preference on Feb. 2 in Knox County will have no obligatory bearing on which candidates the delegates will support at the state convention.

Caucuses are dumb are so are the Republican and Democratic parties. Period.

I thought the same thing until I researched a little. Maine is a very strange state. Here's the thread:

As for my homestate, Washington, the Democrats allocate all of their delegate based on caucus results. They ignore the primary. Republicans allocate 1/2 of their delegates based on caucus results, and 1/2 based on primary results. I'll be participating in both. My caucus is this Saturday.

ah ha....thank you. that could explain why every freakin website explains a different process for choosing of republican delegates in Maine

wait a sec, in the State of Washington where I live they do it different than that! ;) seriously though, I do know how it works here. i already have my primary ballot (I'm in a mail-in only county) that's ready to drop in the mail and i'll be at my caucus this Saturday as well.
