Maybe some Noam Chomsky. He talks a lot about empire building, although you would probably have to draw your own parallels with Ancient Rome. Unfortunately that's all ive really got to offer from my book shelf.

Havent read it myself, but this might fit your bill?
Found it on a quick search of amazon:

Not DIRECTLY Roman vs. Modern, but that stuff does get touched on a bit. And even if you need more, man... it's so worth it.

TWO THUMBS UP for that movie (though not really about rome)!

Out of Breath gave what looks to be a spot on link.

Also, Day of Empire: How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance--and Why They Fall" ...

I saw this Amy Chua lady on a CSpan sitdown interview show (like Charlie Rose style) and not only did she know her shit, and was literate speaking about it, but also if you can't tell from the title, what she speaks about is highly relevant to your question.

    :D

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.

a friend of mine has tried to get me to watch this so i read a little about it and read something about 9/11 conspiracies and they pretty much lost me right there. maybe i'll reconsider.

You might find some useful info in Jared Diamond's book, "Collapse."

That's only about a quarter of what it is about. Watch it.
