Bob Dylan's "Neighborhood Bully"

I'm not as articulate as Bob. His response to the charge against Israel as "bully" remains the best there is.
Nothing I can say to retort the "Israel as bully" party line can match Bob Dylan. So consider his gloriously sarcastic response to this charge (and listen to the song if you get a chance):

Well, the neighborhood bully, he's just one man,
His enemies say he's on their land.
They got him outnumbered about a million to one,
He got no place to escape to, no place to run.
He's the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully just lives to survive,
He's criticized and condemned for being alive.
He's not supposed to fight back, he's supposed to have thick skin,
He's supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in.
He's the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land,
He's wandered the earth an exiled man.
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn,
He's always on trial for just being born.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized,
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize.
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad.
The bombs were meant for him.
He was supposed to feel bad.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, the chances are against it and the odds are slim
That he'll live by the rules that the world makes for him,
'Cause there's a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac.
He's the neighborhood bully.

He got no allies to really speak of.
What he gets he must pay for, he don't get it out of love.
He buys obsolete weapons and he won't be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Well, he's surrounded by pacifists who all want peace,
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease.
Now, they wouldn't hurt a fly.
To hurt one they would weep.
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Every empire that's enslaved him is gone,
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon.
He's made a garden of paradise in the desert sand,
In bed with nobody, under no one's command.
He's the neighborhood bully.

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon,
No contract he signed was worth what it was written on.
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth,
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health.
He's the neighborhood bully.

What's anybody indebted to him for?
Nothin', they say.
He just likes to cause war.
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed,
They wait for this bully like a dog waits to feed.
He's the neighborhood bully.

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers?
Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill,
Running out the clock, time standing still,
Neighborhood bully.

Bob Dylan is officially and idiot.

If he is referring to Israel he doesn't know what he's talking about. Probably read one article on the history of Jews and wrote that song, or maybe he's a Jew himself. People always sympathise with their past. My ancesty makes good watches, I'm a good watch maker, not, I don't know where to begin making watches.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire
  • Yeah, that seems to be the case.

He was born Jewish - Robert Zimmerman - but converted to Christianity. In your mind he's just another dirty Israel-loving Jew.

    no, YOU'RE an idiot.

that song was written over 20 years ago.

Bob was a jew but at the time (1983) he was a passionate Christian.

I know there's a lot of talk about anti-semitism around here lately, and you're cutting it close. Now every single thing that's the slightest bit sympathetic towards Israel is from people who "don't know what they're talking about".

One of Dylan's geniouses is that he can write a song from an honestly unbiased position.
I don't think anyone can do this.
there's anti-Israel sentiments in that song too, but you seem to choose to ignore it so you can act like a big-man calling Mr. Dylan an idiot.
I read the lyrics and all I see him doing is feeling sorry for Israel and acting like they get a bad deal. Victimizing Israel while absolving it of all responsibility for its actions.
    “One good thing about music,
when it hits you, you feel to pain.
    So brutalize me with music.”

Actually, he was a Born Again Christian in the albums leading up to 1983's Infidels. Prior to that album (the cover of which is a photo from Israel), he went to Israel and "rediscovered" his Judaism (whatever that means for entertainers who change their religion like we change socks). So at the time of that album, and this song, he considered himself Jewish.

And the time of 20 years ago creates no distance as it was right in the midst of the other upheval in Lebanon. You know, when Hezbollah was taking Americans hostage and killing them. When the father of Steve Kerr (former NBA player, now analyst) was president of the American University in Beriut was shot and killed by Hezbollah. You know, when Hezbollah killed 241 US Marines there as requested to be "peacekeepers". You know, when Lebanese Christian militias slaughtered Palestinians yet Israel was blamed and Sharon still called a "war criminal" for it.

Gee, sounds like it all couldve been 20 MINUTES ago.

i just meant that he's got a way of seeing both sides if he chooses to.

i had something else in mind, sorry. this song is fairly biased, but makes some good points.

There's NO anti-Israel sentiment in that song. It's unadulterated SARCASM with the only "anti" sentiment being against the exact type of criticism Israel will always get no matter what it does. Look at all those lyrics. The sentiment is against the constant critics of Israel blinded by their hate. (And no that doesnt mean ALL criticism of Israel, which can be legitimate ... but most of the stuff on the Moving Train is not of that variety).

But the theme of the song can be applied both ways, imo.

    Is that opinion, or fact?

'cause even your facts are generally very selective and slanted.

  • Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick, but when they will I can only guess.
They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy,
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me.
    I can't help it if I'm lucky.

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts.
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at,
I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that
    Sweet lady.

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin' south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
    You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like.
There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin' out of a boxcar door,
You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars
    After losin' every battle.

I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin' me see stars.
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies.
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzin' around your eyes,
    Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb,
Blowing through the curtains in your room.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
    You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart.
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped,
What's good is bad, what's bad is good, you'll find out when you reach the top
    You're on the bottom.

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes
    don't look into mine.
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building
    burned.
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime
    turned Slowly into autumn.

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull,
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
    You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin' I was somebody else instead.
Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy,
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
    And all your ragin' glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free,
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me.
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats,
Blowing through the letters that we wrote.
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves,
    We're idiots, babe.
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.
