T.v

Anyone watch it? The only time I watch t.v is if there's a boxing match or football match on.
I missed - maybe 'missed' is the wrong word - everything to do with the election, apart from Obama's victory speech, which I streamed from CNN on my p.c.
I read all the bruhaha about Sarah Palin, and I feel genuinely pleased that I've never seen her or heard her speak.
My point is, who really needs a t.v? I mean, If there's anything that you want to see especially - The Soprano's, old Northern Exposure episodes, a movie, a documentary - then you can just download them, right?

I don't miss t.v one bit.

i haven't had cable for a while and don't miss it. i can use a wii to get on the net and watch things
    standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

  • I don't "have" a tv. Technically I do but it's just for dvds, which I watch pretty rarely. It's been over a year now since I've watched any broadcast in my home on a television. I do watch specific things online at my leisure. I was able to keep well up to date with perhaps one of the most ridiculous presidential races in history online. Watched all the debates and the election night coverage via streaming feeds. I am perfectly fine without television.

In fact I just read about some US study about miserable people watching lots of television. I'll see if I can find a link.

True. But for about 2 years before coming out here the only thing I'd watch in England other then the boxing or footie was the history channel.
Anyway, I see you're in Hong Kong. What's terrestrial t.v like down there? Is it all Chinese like up here - other than CCTV9, which s shit - or do they have a load of U.S and British stuff on?

I basically only watch sports on TV. Starting to watch more and more of that online, so I may cancel my very basic programming package.

I hardly ever watch TV but I like to have one because I watch a lot of films and a TV is generally a better way to watch a DVD than my laptop.

:) Quality! I can just imagine you on the phone to your cable co. asking to cancel everything except the sports channel. I wonder what their reaction would be? "What? You don't even want MTV Mr Know 1? Are you sure you know what you're doing?"

But let's face it, outside of the occasional must-see sporting event, it's all mostly pure shite.

They have lots of channels and it is mostly Chinese and British. I get all the Discovery channels which I watch quite a bit. AXN and Starworld too which plays a lot of US TV shows. i.e. CSI, Friends, Seinfeld, and some current shows, but they are a year behind. I actually don't watch much TV either because there is so much to do and fun to be had in Hong Kong.

I do have a slingbox setup at home which I only use for Football....
  • i just watch football, and maybe the odd Simpsons rerun. i dont miss cable except for comedy central, but i can watch South Park online anyway.

i now work from home, and its too dangerous to keep on while i work. i get distracted easily.

I have a TV, with freeview, but I only tend to have BBC News 24 on in the background. It's a pity I don't get MSNBC. I have to rely on the Internet for it.

I've always been a radio freak. I love my shortwave, with all its numbers stations and broadcasts from (probably Big Gov-assisted) rebel factions in strange lands.

I've only been to HK once - earlier this year - and despite getting my bag stolen, with my camera, i-pod, shades e.t.c - Bah!! - I loved the place. It's not really China though, in that it's nothing like most of the mainland. I only recently discovered that CCTV5 show live boxing matches - the big fights - and some live Premiership football games. I was gonna buy a satellite dish but I don't think I'll bother now.

I have a TV, but no TV antenna, so I can only watch videos and DVDs (and stuff on my computer). But how did you know I'm still watching Northern Exposure compliments of Netflix?? :o:p

    TELVISION: Drug Of The Nation

DISPOSABLE HEROES OF HIPHOPRISY - Television by Micheal Franti

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjclAlkN7Uo&feature=related ....

    TV: Drug Of The Nation

One nation under god has turned into
one nation under the influence of one drug

    (chorus)
Television, the drug of the nation
    Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

    T.V., it satellite links
    our united states of unconsciousness
    apathetic therapeutic and extremely addictive
    the methadone metronome pumping out
    150 channels 24 hours a day
you can flip through all of them
and still there's nothing worth watching
T.V. is the reason why less than ten percent
of our nation reads books daily
why most people think Central America means Kansas
    socialism means unamerican
and apartheid is a new headache remedy
absorbed in its world it's so hard to find us
it shapes our mind the most
maybe the mother of our nation
should remind us that we're sitting too close to...

    (chorus)
Television, the drug of the nation
    Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

    T.V. is the stomping ground
    for political candidates
    where bears in the woods
are chased by grecian formula'd bald eagles
    T.V. is mechanized politic's
    remote control over the masses
    co-sponsored by enironmentally safe gases
    watch for the PBS special
it's the perpetuation of the two-party system
where image takes precedence over wisdom
where sound bite politics are served
    to the fastfood culture
where straight teeth in your mouth
are more important than the words
    that come out of it
race baiting is the way to get elected
Willie Horton or will he not get elected on...

    (chorus)
Televison, the drug of the nation
    Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

T.V., is it the reflector or the director
does it imitate us or do we imitate it
because a child watches 1500 murders
    before he's twelve years old
and we wonder how we've created
a Jason generation that learns to laugh
    rather than abhor the horror
T.V. is the place where armchair generals
and quarterbacks can experience first hand
    the excitement of video warfare
as the themesong is sung in the background
sugar sweet sitcoms that leave us with
a bad actor taste while pop stars metamorphosize
into soda pop stars you saw the video
    you heard the soundtrack
well now go buy the soft drink
well, the only cola that I support
is a union C.O.L.A. (cost of living allowance) on...

    (chorus)
Television, the drug of the nation
    Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

    Back again, "new and improved"
we return to our irregularly programmed schedule
    hidden cleverly between heavy breasted
    beer and car commmercials
    CNNESPNABCTNT but mostly B.S.
    where oxymoronic language like
    "virtually spotless" "fresh frozen"
    light yet filling" and
    "military intelligence" have become standard
T.V. is the place where phrases are redefined
    like "recession" to "necessary downturn"
"crude oil" on a beach to "mousse"
    "civilian death" to "collateral damages"
and being killed by your own army
    is now called "friendly fire"
T.V. is the place where the pursuit of
happiness has become the pursuit of trivia
    where toothpaste and cars
    have become sex objects
where imagination is sucked out of children
    by a cathode ray nipple
T.V. is the only wet nurse
    that would create a cripple
    on...

    (chorus)
Television, the drug of the nation
    Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation

I cannot believe I am going to be the first one in all these responses to say ~ I love tv.. love my tivo, I think it is most likely one of THE BEST INVENTIONS in many years. I find many quality programs that are always waiting to be watched from my tivo list.

There.. I am the one TV watcher and proudly so.

Shit! You even have a nickname for it!
  • It's crazy how much TV controls people's lives, without them even realizing it. That's what is really scary. I don't watch much TV, mostly baseball games when I do. But I will find myself once in a while staring zombie like at the TV watching nothing really. Flipping through channels watching absolute shit, and I know it. But yet I continue to stare at it, until I finally just hit the power button. It literally sucks you in, like an addiction. Losing cable for a few months because of money issues was one of the best things to happen to me. With no TV or Internet too I was actually forced to seek out other interests such as books and other interests. Life would be so much more interesting without TV. Add all the propaganda that saturates the air waves and you have yourself a really terrifying circus machine which many people take as reality.

I occasionally catch a headline on the MSN main page, or it's equivalent, as I'm waiting for my e-mail page to appear - some of these headlines refer to X-Factor, or American Idol, or some such shit, and I feel genuinely grateful that I'm not in a position where I have to see that crap everyday. Not just the t.v, but even just sitting on a train in England on the way to work and seeing the front pages of other people's newspapers used to depress me - or the fact that every fucker was reading the same book.
I used to enjoy looking at the adverts on the Seoul subway as they were all unintelligible to me and so they were innocuous. If I looked at an advert on the London underground I'd feel imposed upon - even violated in some way. This shit comes at you from many angles. T.v is just a constant barrage of crap. Being in Asia I can look at this stuff and it has no effect on me because I can't interpret the language. It's all just wallpaper to me here. So I feel cleaner.

We have a TV which we only use for watching things downloaded from the net and DVDs.

I just find having a TV on droning in the background a great irritation.
Keep on rockin in the free world!!!!

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.

Agreed. I will walk into my parent's house and the TV will be on, and nobody is even watching it. It's just on. It's some sort of comfort thing. I lived with people in college who would fall asleep to the TV, and it would play all night. I can't stand having the TV on the background.

Totally. Not that I don't watch my fair share of programs. However, I HATE having the motherfucker on at all times.
My husband loves it. Not only as background noise, but he has at times made freaking excel sheets to figure out the scheduling of the shows he wants to watch and how he can record them all.

    It's an issue. :o

as for what i watch, besides 30 rock, boston legal and entourage i usually watch discovery, tlc and law and order reruns :)

I used to watch TV a lot but now I've been without one for three months and I don't miss it one bit. Like you said, the stuff I want to see I can see it online.

But then again, I live in a nice city now, there are lots of cool people here, there's lots to do... I lived in a small town before, it's a huge difference.

  • I stopped watching TV for a while, maybe 8-10 months. But recently I started buying the "tv-dvds" for different shows, like House. I enjoying watching the dvds more than the tv. I can put a dvd on, and just watch the show I want to watch, and not have to flip through tons of channels until I stumble on somthing stupid. There are certain nights that I watch the regular programming, usually just to unwind after work (2 jobs) and relax.
