'McDonald's Announces Olympic Partnership Through 2012 Games
First Time McDonald's Has Renewed
Its Sponsorship for Four Consecutive Olympic Games
McDonald's today announced the renewal of its worldwide Olympic Partnership through the 2012 Games, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to the Olympic Movement and the athletes who compete in the world's premiere sporting event.
As a TOP (The Olympic Partners Program) sponsor and Official Restaurant of the Olympic Games, McDonald's serves its world-famous food to the thousands of athletes, coaches and spectators in attendance. This eight-year renewal continues McDonald's exclusive marketing rights in the restaurant and food service category for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy; the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China; the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada; and the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be awarded to a host city in July 2005.
"McDonald's has been a proud Olympic partner for nearly three decades because we believe in the spirit and ideals of the Games," said Jim Cantalupo, McDonald's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "As a global brand serving 47 million customers every day, we share the same core principles of teamwork, excellence and being the best that make the Olympic Games a model of excellence for the world."
As a TOP sponsor, McDonald's rights include: use of the Olympic rings in global marketing efforts; exclusive sponsorship opportunities with the 201 national Olympic teams around the world; and status as the Official Restaurant Partner of the Olympic Games through 2012. In addition to providing food service at the Olympic Games, McDonald's will conduct Olympic-themed promotions and activities to support the Olympic Games in its markets and countries worldwide.
Peter Tan, McDonald's relationship partner in China said, "McDonald's China is pleased to welcome the 2008 Olympic Games to Beijing. It is our honor and privilege to continue the McDonald's tradition of serving athletes from around the world a familiar taste of home. Our 580 McDonald's restaurants throughout China will also proudly deliver this special customer experience to our worldwide guests."
McDonald's commitment to the international Olympic Movement began in 1968, when the company airlifted hamburgers to U.S. athletes in Grenoble, France. Since then, McDonald's has served its menu of choice and variety to millions of athletes, their families and fans. The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens mark McDonald's fourth Olympics as a TOP sponsor and fifth as the Official Restaurant of the Olympic Games.'

Ahhhh, nothing like a little intelligent conversation on A Moving Train.
and hahaha, the thread starter spelled 'sponsors' wrong in the title!!
They provide a service that obviously a lot of people like.
I enjoy eating McDonalds every couple weeks. It's not McDonalds fault that some lazy people eat there everyday and get fat.
I don't know if you ever saw the movie supersize me. But whatever I remember when I hear the "plot" of the movie (a guy eats mcdonalds every meal for 30 days, everyday) I thought "man, he's gonna die". My brother thought the same, my friends too. In fact I can't think of one person whose first reaction wasn't : those 30 days are going to do serious damage to his body.
I think that's the reason people aren't too happy with McDonalds : the food they serve is unhealthy in every sense of the word and for a restaurant...
Even more if they sponsor the olympics!
But, what I'm getting at is that a movie like super-size me unfairly singles out McDonald's when there are a myriad of other fast-food chains that are just as guilty.

They are not sponsoring the Olympics for charitable purposes.. think.. their logo plastered all over the place, for days, worldwide, reaching millions and millions of people... Better than any advertising campaign ever!
Damn! You're right! Still, it was early in the morning. I'd only just woken up!
They are not people!! They are whales/fat aliens in the bodies of humans! I suspect a conspiracy!!
Good point. But i guess no more ironic than Budweiser sponsoring the World Cup in Germany.
At least Adidas got it right when choosing the Dublin Marathon!
Haha me too. I suspect Bush. He will start a healthcare company catering to these species in 08'.
Nah.... everyone knows football and beer go together!! :D:D

and to the person that said the guy in 'supersize me' was doing damage to his body....no duh! he's eating every meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) at mcdonald's for 30 straight days. but if you're only eating one meal a week there.....i really doubt that's going to fuck you up that much.

What I don't understand is why Americans feel the need to eat at McDonalds. I was in the States last year and remember going to a place called 'Ryans' where for something like $9 you could eat as much as you wanted. And they had everything in there - a Mexican section, a grill section, salad bar, e.t.c. It was fucking amazing! I mean, why would anyone want to go to McDonalds?? There's so many better places over there.
And Ryan's sucks. Golden Corral is where it's at, buddy!

Golden Corral? Didn't see that one!
I thought this same thing at the very beginning of this thread.

It's unhealthy food so it may seem strange for a company with such a reputation to sponsor the olympics. All the posts saying mcdonalds is not alone (burger king, bud, coke) do make a point : why does the cio allow these sponsoring? does it not taint a bit the healthy sport image the olympics should convey (already tainted though with the drugs but that's another issue)?
- the great Sir Leo Harrison
Well obviously it can't be good, but he ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there, everyday, of course it's not going to be healthy. To say their food is unhealthy in every sense is in my opinion a huge exaggeration.
naděje umírá poslední
But TV sports is not about healthy athletes but the slobs that watch them on the tube.
As for McDonald's, anyone who eats there more than a handful of times a year should know better.
there you are.

What about a greasy, cheesy, ketchup covered irony with a side of fries and a coke?
Started a get a little hot, huh?
He got excited, huh?
He sure did! At first I thought it was just his big get-up jumpsuit or the air-conditioner was broken or something but he kept telling me how special I was and how he always got really hot around special kids! And I was like wow! I'm one of Ronald's special friends! And he made me an honourary special ice-cream taster! The best birthday ever! God bless McDonald's!
