US drops Cuban militant's charges

A US judge has dropped immigration charges against a Cuban exile, Luis Posada Carriles, who has been accused of blowing up a Cuban airliner.

Mr Posada, 79, was detained in May 2005 after entering the US illegally, but was released on bail last month.

A former CIA employee, he is wanted in Venezuela and Cuba over the downing of a Cuban airliner in 1976 in which 73 people died. He denies involvement.

US authorities have ruled out returning him to Cuba or Venezuela.

Mr Posada was due to go on trial next Monday.

However, on Tuesday, US district judge Kathleen Cardone dismissed the immigration fraud indictment in a court in El Paso, Texas.

"I am free," Mr Posada exclaimed on a Miami-based radio station, according to the AFP news agency.

"Thank God, you, all of my brothers, the people in Cuba... for this victory," he said.

His lawyer, Felipe Millan, said the judge had ruled that statements by Mr Posada that were to be used against him had been obtained illegally.

"They tricked him," Mr Millan said.

US justice department spokesman Dean Boyd said: "We're reviewing the decision."

Gee, I reckon ole Osamie's probably a rootin' and a tootin' it up down on ole Georgie boys ranch down there. I read a CIA report on international terrorism a few years ago which stated that ole Osamie liked all kinds of music. It stated clear as day itself that he had him a likin for both Country and Western!

My guess is ole Osamie and Georgie boy are ridin' bareback as we speakin!

Steve thanks for posting this. This is evidence of the pure hypocrisy that our government operates within. While we chastize any country for harboring/aiding aterrorist we have quietly done the same. I am sickened by the fact that Luis Posada Carilles will not face justice because this administration would put politics before justice.

That may be true but the administration does have to power to oder an extradition. They refuse to do so because of political reasons. Had the roles been reverse and Cuba or Venezuela where holding the prisoner you know our government would be screaming to high hell to get him sent over. Our media and adminstration would be declaring Venezuela and Cuba as countries that support terrorism. Yet we do it and nothing.

mammasan has been posting about this guy for years ... no matter how you define terrorist - this guy is it ... unless you apply the nobody who acts in the interests of america can be a terrorist rule ... then u might have a case ...

otherwise - its further proof america lacks the righteousness required to stage wars based on lofty words such as democracy and freedom ...

Keep on rockin in the free world!!!!

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.

The fact that we are at odds with Venezuela and Cuba. Did you know that we have had a standing extradition treaty with Venezuala since 1922.

I'm sure if the Venezualan & Cuban governemnt where pro-US, Posada would have been extradited already.

Possible another reason is that many of Posada terror campaigns where carried out while he was on the CIA payroll. I'm sure we don't want to air our dirty laundry. The public doesn't need to know that the great fighter of terrorism was at one time the biggest supporter of terrorism in Latin America.

no, sounds like someone had connections
    standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way
