Cheney backs Israel over security

US Vice-President Dick Cheney has given strong backing to Israel ahead of talks with Palestinian leaders.

Mr Cheney said the US would never put any pressure on Israel over issues he said would threaten its security.

"America's commitment to Israel's security is enduring and unshakeable, as is our commitment to Israel's right to defend itself - always - against terrorism, rocket attacks and other threats from forces dedicated to Israel's destruction," Mr Cheney said.

"The United States will never pressure Israel to take steps to threaten its security."

"We want to see a resolution to the conflict, an end to the terrorism that has caused so much grief to Israelis, and a new beginning for the Palestinian people," he said.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called Mr Cheney's comments "completely biased in favour of the Israeli occupation".

He said they confirmed that the US "is a partner to Israel in its war against our people and against the Gaza Strip".

Yep, those poor Israelis sure have been suffering all these years. It must be a terrible burden on them to have to carry out an illegal, and brutal military occupation, to murder tens of thousands of people, and to steal their land. My heart bleeds for them.

Yeah, its kinda hard to feel sorry for either side when they both commit such atrocious acts.

I don't know about you, but Ive found that in life there is rarely if ever a "level playing field". Your constant attempts to make the one side "more evil" than the other based simply on the fact that they have a better arsenel is tired. BOTH sides are horrible. Agree, or not? Truly thats the bottom line. Taking sides when both sides are a disgrace to humanity is an exercise in futility.

I've never said that Israel is "more evil" simply because 'they have a better arsenal'.
Do you think that the Jewish resistance movements in Nazi occupied Europe were no better than the Nazis because they resorted to acts of 'terrorism' against the occupation army who were themselves 'terrorising' them?

Dick Cheney would be happy to know there are people like you swallowing the daily bullshit put out by the conservative puppet media every day.

You're right. Both sides are horrible and we shouldn't take sides. We should do, and say nothing, and go about our daily lives in the knowledge that our wonderful leaders have it all figured out.

    Happy Easter!

    like this??

In his remarks, Cheney said, "A negotiated end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- one that addresses the legitimate national claims of both people -- will have limitless value. Years of mistrust and violence have achieved nothing, and the extremists who have stood in the way of a settlement have only caused further grief and suffering to the Palestinian and Israeli people."

    and this??

After meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Cheney stressed the U.S. commitment to the creation of an independent Palestinian state, saying it was "long overdue."

I think Ghandi had it right. TBH

And who said I'm swallowing anything? I think the Israelis are just as big a piece of shit as them.

You may not be swallowing any bs, but thats only because your mouth is so full of it that you CANT swallow. :)

Damn you got me. I DID say that we should say and do nothing didnt I?

Surely you realize that you rarely if ever chastise or condemn "your side", other than to prelude a post with "yeah both sides are doing horrible things BUT................."

I agree that the US should stop backing Israel. I agree that doing nothing at all would be unwise. But I don't think your approach to the problem does any good.

    Peace.

'The extremeists'? I'll expalin it for you: 'The extremists' means 'The Palestinians'. In the meantime, Israel is permitted to continue it's illegal settlement expansion, and is permitted to terrorise the Palestinians with missile attacks, extra-judicial assasinations, and sniper attacks against it's civilians.

And what would this Palestinian state look like exactly? Please elaborate.

Maybe it would look exactly like it currently looks, or maybe even worse. I.e, an apartheid style system of bantustan type sectors partitioned and policed by Israeli soldiers, and with no autonomous air or sea space.

Yup, America sure does suck  Our representatives just don't respect human life as much as the leaders in China.

That's right - no more, and no less.

Edit: I get the impression that you think just because I'm living here that I must respect the Chinese Government and their attitude to human rights? Very strange.

Can you explain to me when 'the U.S government' became 'America'? Seriously, I'm really interested to know when this osmosis occured.

Because it's the American government, meaning those assholes are elected by us. You even said "what wonderful people the U.S. government are." Last time I checked, there aren't many foreigners elected to our government. I'll admit this country isn't perfect, but if you can find me the country that is, I'll shake your hand. It just gets a little tiring to constantly hear about how terrible my homeland is. I'm also a little annoyed because it seems as if we're failing to live up to the ideals that have made my nation a beacon of hope for oppressed peoples. But I'm sure I didn't need to tell you that. I guess I just wanted to save you the time of pointing it out to me.

Maybe then,- as I've been pointing out, often indirectly - there's something fundamentally wrong with the system you have over there. And yes, the U.K's pretty fucked in that respect too.

Anyway, fuck it! I've just been exploring a couple of temples here today and have just discovered a lovely little street behind my apartment and am currently sitting in a fantastic, pretty little bar drinking beer and listening to Leonard Cohen. (The owner has a p.c on the bar).

    Fuck politics...for now! ;)

Amen, my friend. How cool is the Internet? I can discuss, or sometimes argue, things with a Brit living in China while I'm at my computer in Illinois. Thank you, Al Gore. :winks:
