i love the mt.....we can get some reasonable discussion with "obama says" but "mccain says" and quickly it becomes a single cell organism retreat.

Your first mistake was comparing the two threads... The Obama one was about a statement that can actually create discussion about an issue, but this one is just an extremely simple statement.

Your post is pretty black & white and will only be taken two ways... some people will be insulted that a presidential candidate is calling the country a bunch of whiners, but most of us do agree with the statement to a point.

For the record McCain didn't say that. His economic advisor did but he didn't. You may continue to ridicule him now.

I just got a spam email from his campaign about 3 seconds ago. I wonder if he talked to Bush about The Google and The Internets to figure out how to email.

BTW, his campaign logo and colors are pretty uninspiring- you can definitely see he is directing himself with plain people that like boredom..

Wow, reading the whole quote just shows how out of touch that rich people are with the rest of the country... He's talking in big picture terms, and completely missing how our economic mess is hurting average people.

From former senator Phil Gramm, McCain's economic advisor:
"You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," he said, noting that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices. "We may have a recession; we haven't had one yet."

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

"We've never been more dominant; we've never had more natural advantages than we have today," he said. "We have benefited greatly" from the globalization of the economy in the last 30 years.

edit: Gramm in all his delusion also said today that without John McCain, the United States would have lost the war on Iraq.

McCain initially supported the statement but is now rejecting it. I think he sometimes forgets what decade he is in.
    ===========================
The McCain campaign is working hard to distance itself from statements made by economic adviser Phil Gramm describing the current economic downturn as a "mental recession" and saying America had "sort of become a nation of whiners."

But in an initial statement published by Politico and then, seemingly, removed from its site, a McCain campaign aide actually stood by Gramm's remarks, saying the interview as a whole was merely meant as a preview of the Senator's economic agenda.

"Mr. Gramm was simply saying that we are laying out the economic plan this week," the piece quoted a "McCain official" as saying. "The plan is comprehensive, providing immediate near-term relief for Americans hurting today as well as longer-term solutions to get our economy back on track, secure our energy future and deliver jobs, prosperity and opportunity for the next generation. We're laying out that plan this week with an emphasis on the critical importance of job creation, and it's been a great success so far."

Only after the fallout from Gramm's statement did the McCain campaign fully backtrack.

"Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views," read a campaign statement. "John McCain travels the country every day talking to Americans who are hurting, feeling pain at the pump and worrying about how they'll pay their mortgage. That's why he has a realistic plan to deliver immediate relief at the gas pump, grow our economy and put Americans back to work."

The two statements - the first one issued to Politico and the one offered to the press list this morning - are diametrically different. And they seem to reflect recognition, by the McCain camp, that Gramm's remark on the economy is simply un-spinnable.

  • It all depends on how you feel. i feel like that the republican government of the past 8 years has given us things to whine about. What they are really trying to say is: don't speak up, it's weak and we are doing so well.

    Macho bullshit.

i am guilty of only catching the ticker, with regards to "nation of whiners".

as i have given it more thought, i do think we are a nation of whiners only because we have become cynical towards their guidance and supposed leadership.

I could be off the mark with this, but it seems like someone who says we are "whiners", might be a bit out of touch with the realities of day to day living of the average working guy/gal in America. Out of touch or blind and deaf and maybe retarded. (no offense to the retarded.)

Tell me what is good about the economy right now, Mr. Dickhead Gramm? Sell me on the idea that we have a glorious booming, growing economy.

Here's something else. Generally speaking, isn't it a good idea to have your policy advisor actually agree with your actual policies when they speak for you? So, is this how John McCain feels?

These stupid old rich men. They don't know jack shit.

    end of rant.

however they don't know we're either in or entering a recession.

I'd say that makes them pretty stupid.

in your post it does not say that Mccain supported the statement but it does say that a McCain aide said it. lets be fair, if an Obama supporter said something liek this we woudl be saying that Obama did not say it. do you remember that whole tread about teh muslims not being allowed behind Obama for that photo-op. most people here said that this was not Obama doing that. we must say the same thing here.
