England afraid to fly its own flag:

Following warnings by extremist Islamic group al-Muhajiroun, in which the group said that the red cross in the England flag symbolizes the 'blood thirsty crusaders' and the occupation of Muslims, some of the largest companies in England have ordered their workers not to wave the flags.

The Islamic protest forced some corporations, such as cable companies NTL, Heathrow airport in London, and even the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Agency to ban the flag in every form due to fears from reactions of Muslims.

The Sun said that a large pub network has banned drinkers from entering with symbols of the national team.

My main focus of this thread was to be focused on the extremists in Islam. I belive that the extremist Christians get just as much media attention. Just look at the protesters at the funerals. Bush just passed a bill that prohibited protesters at funerals. Thats an extremist Christian group that protests funerals.

That's sad. What's even more sad is that the US and UK picked a fight they can't win. Sad but true.

You can't show islamic fundamentalists they "way" by bombing their homeland. It unifies them to a cause.

Best thing would be to get out of the middle east asap and recognize the muslim belief as a distinct people.

I can tell you that on news here the Heathrow ban is said to be for health and safety reasons as the flags could blow onto runways.

Thanks for finding something that confirmed what I said earlier about Heathrow. I also haven't heard anything to do with the bans being connected to any threats.

It's all been PC (schools, Tesco) or health and safety (Heathrow, driving organisations).

And with the amount of cars that are driving around with flags as far as I can see not many people are paying any attention to either.

The first thing i want to say is that it doesn't have anything to do with the union jack - the England flag is plain white with (red)st george's cross on it.........I presonally don't have objections to flags but can see why some people would seeing as that specific flag was adopted by the neo nazi and white supremists.........I AM NOT stating that everyone with a this flag or who fly this flag are drawn to that persuasion....merely that its be abused...............Here in Belfast flags are such an issue and its really pathetic to get drawn into the territorial arguemnt surrounding that issue.....

So flag your flags at home why do you need them in a work place?

Finally the more absurd and weird censorship idea belongs to that of radio one who are banning all english world cup songs from the radio station - all 30 of them incase they offend anyone from Scotland Wales or Ireland listening to them ...............oh please I don't think any of the above mentioed nations would give a shit ..............

Not that I'm putting any stock into this article and it's claims.

But I'm fairly certain that if you take a good look the symbols and do some historical research of a majority of the nations (of the world's ) flags; you could easily tie in a majority of the symbols on those flags, in one way or another, with a very ruthless, violent episode in their history.

All this flag stuff (including the crap here in the states regarding the "Confederate Flag" ) are equally absurd. Just a bunch of idiots with nothing better to do, than try to manipulate and intimidate everyone into conceding to their stupidity.

Some companies are not allowing sporting flags. Many of the instances is flags on cars, which could be a traffic hazard, and in some cases it is companies that, as companies usually do, dont want to be shown as "choosing sides" while doing business with different countries and groups. And few places, if anywhere, is the reason cited as "threats" or other from our new whipping boys, the muslims. The piece is liberatinlgy free of references to muslims saying what is claimed, apart from a mosque official quoted as "We're not offended - It's a national flag!". They accuse busybodies and other nice names of being the "brains" behind this, but again, being very free of references or quotes. It's just a list of various company policies where they dont want flags all over the place.

This whole case "The Sun standing up for every patriotic englishman to sport his flag" is a big bunch of bullshit. Perhaps it is a small problem in some companies, and some are probably being over-reactive and a bit too keen on being non-offensive. But the whole campaign here is just stupid, overblown and created by the tabloid of all tabloids, the sun. Only aim is selling a bit more papers and whipping up the nationalist atmosphere in preparation for the world cup.

Yep, and I can tell ya that the sun is the paper of choice for men in construction in Ireland . Well the working men - the engineers seem to buy 'intelligent but easy' The Independant. The Project manager (when he can be bothered dipping his hands in his pockets) buys the ultimite in 'look how intelligent I am' - The Times :eek: . I buy the Star (an Irish tabloid) it gets the points across, doesn't make me think at ALL BUT it's getting as bad as the sun.
