Mark Foley Scandal = Exaggerated

Looking into the whole "Foley-gate" scandal, ive found out that its no big deal.

Reading the laws in Washington D.C., where both Foley and the 16-year old boy lived, there are some interesting facts. If Foley would of had sex with the boy no crime would have been commited. The age of consent in DC is 16. In DC a 16-year old can have sex with anyone over the age of 16, even if the man/women was over 50. But. . .

After the "Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006" (sponserd by Mark Foley himself) was passed, it made any discussion or solicitation of sexual acts between an adult and someone under 18 illegal.

So, according to the law, having sex with a 16-year old is just fine. But, discussing/soliciting a sexual act with a 16-year old is illegal. You can have sex, you just cant talk about it.

hmmmm. . .

    Revised Code of Washington

    Updated again 01-2001:

    RCW 9A.44.093

"(1) A person is guilty of sexual misconduct with a minor in the first degree when the person has, or knowingly causes another person under the age of eighteen to have, sexual intercourse with another person who is at least sixteen years old but less than eighteen years old and not married to the perpetrator, if the perpetrator is at least sixty months older than the victim, is in a significant relationship to the victim, and abuses a supervisory position within that relationship in order to engage in or cause another person under the age of eighteen to engage in sexual intercourse with the victim."

The Age of Consent in Washington is not 18. It is 16. The statute (shown above) that you are making reference to makes it a crime for a person 60-months or older than the younger person to have sexual intercoarse with the younger person if ALL of the following conditions exist:

1-The older person is in a "significent" relationship with the younger person, AND the older person is in a supervisory relationship within that relationship, AND uses that supervisory position in order to have sexual intercourse with the younger person.

This statute refers to relationships between persons who become sexually involved 16 or 17-years-olds, and who are in a position of authority over the younger person and use this authority to gain a sexual advantage. Such a situation might exist between a 16 or 17-year-old student and a teacher or coach who is at least 60 months older.

http://www.ageofconsent.com is an interesting website. It's suprising how many countries have ages of consent as low as 12. Also how many countries homosexual sex is still illegal. In some cases such as Papua - New Guinea it is illegal for male-male sex, but female-female sex is allowed at age 16. In many cases the age of consent is 16 or younger, but homosexual sex isn't allowed until the age of 18. In Iran of course all sex is illegal outside of marriage and homosexual sex is never legal.

the e-mails are an example of a congressmen using his position of power help him solicit sex from high school kids.

that is a crime.. and the the preditor in this case is a danger to other children and once this was determined, it should have been stopped.

But it was not, he was left to continue as though Congress wanted to maintain this perk.

    That is pretty serious.

The one thing that is blown out of proportion is the partisan tilt.. they are all congressman - this in not a republican thing - its a congress thing and a very big problem.

Isn't it a criteria for scandal that it's exagerrated? Sure this is exagerrated. Like the Lewinsky-thing a few years ago. Really nothings, at least politically, but made potent in moral-scare-prone America.

But I guess the repubs are in for some pay-back. and some democrat in another 5 years I guess. And so on.

    Peace

    it's as exagerrated as lewinsky-gate.

    Not even close.

Clinton and Lewinsky were consenting adults.

This is about a pedophile senator trying to use his power and influence over younger kids.
The less you know, the more you believe.

it's ironic the "holier than thou republican's" are being accused of covering up for a homosexual page chasing republican. Can just imagine if this happened to a Democrat, where's Georgy in all this...haven't heard from him.
Though I despise the current administration, I see this being very similar to what Clinton did.....Monika knew what she was doing...and if a page...of 16 or more actually led Foley on, by replying to his emails/text mes they knew what they were doing.
Foley's a scumbag and should be punished...and we the American people should see all those republicans that were involved as the hypocrites they are.
...but they'll throw in a few "God Bless America's" and be okay.

Saw in Drudge the religious right are taking position it was all Foley's fault.......so convenient.

When will the American people wake up?????

  • i think it's ridiculous that people are using this scandal as a tool for this whole republican/democrat horseshit.

here's the story. some shit went down that shouldn't have happened. investigate it, punish the people. just like a criminal loses his rights, this guy should lose the label. he represents a sick sad man. it is an isolated incident. it is sad that so much labeling and name calling is being pushed to further different agendas.

the agenda should be to seek justice and keep this quiet. we look like a bunch of fucking idiots!

While I agree the the political circle jerk over this is out of control (like it is with most issues), I don't think that this should be kept quiet. People like this should get all of the embarrassing attention that Foley is getting, and if people above him did what they could to sweep it under the rug, they should be called out on it as well.

I guess to 'Foley Apologists'... a man getting a blow job from an adult woman is far more repulsive than a 54 year old man jacking off into a towel while instant messaging a 16 year old boy in a mesh t-shirt and tighty whitey underpants.

ok, more along the lines as keep it to the point. i agree, foley and the 'sweepers' should be embarraced. BUT this should NOT have anything to do with what party he belongs to. the reason i say we look like fucking idiots is because we care more about which party he belonged to than the actual crime itself. it seems as if most of the attention is directed at how it is going to affect the elections. so yeah, blo blo blo. i've exaggerated the point.

Well, Monica Lewinsky was over the age of 18....and the Republicans made a big deal out of that.

    Here's proof...

The problem is that the 'sweepers' seem to be top republican leadership in the House, and they are trying to turn the story into an attack on Democrats for bringing it to the media (though, it is claimed by the media who released it that it was Republicans who leaked the info, and nobody seems to have any evidence otherwise). I've seen a couple Congressman talk about getting to the bottom of who leaked it(putting Dems under oath etc), rather than getting to the bottom of the coverup itself. I guess it shows where the priorities are.

both were against the law. it shouldn't matter. neither should have been exaggerated as much. it is pointless to argue which is creepier because the underlying principle is that both cases were isolated and do not represent the beliefs of either party. it should be considered ridiculous to use this against either party. this is nonsense and is why we can't get anything solved. it's like a political civil war. im not very educated on politics, but it seems like we need to focus on being american. we need to focus on loving one another, accepting one another for our differences, and get this country back on the less bumpy path.

see, that is just too damn complicated and whoever has more money or control over the media is going to come out on top. it's ridiculous. both parties should be 'swept' away. kick all the fuck ups out. get some honest people in there. fuck, are there any left?

It has everything to do with CREEPINESS. It's just fucking creepy... if it happens in the House Of Representatives or the Board Room on General Motors or your local High School... it's just plain creepy.
