Pearl Jam and fans, Please help!

Smiths Beach needs you to help against greedy developers and corrupt politicians. One of the worlds most precious places is under threat.

If you have listened to any of the Perth, Australia bootlegs, you will hear Eddie dedicate 'Elderly Woman' to people he met in Yallingup, a very small surfing town in the south west of Western Australia with some of the best beaches and surf in the world. Between Dunsborough, Yallingup and Margaret River are a number of small costal communities with beautiful beaches that is totally adored by tourists from all over the world. Smiths Beach is the next bay after Yallingup.

Our region is also known for world class wines. On the last Perth boot you will hear Eddie thank "Margaret River" - he was holding a bottle of our local Margaret River red wine at the time that was given to him from a Pearl Jam ten club member during the show (think he almost got kicked out smuggling it in).

Obviously, this is a place close to Eddie's (and the rest of the band) heart. And it is a place close to the heart of all West Australians and also many people from all around the globe. We welcome visitors, you can stay in everything from backpackers hostels to family style holiday homes to exclusive high end resorts and apartments. We are not anti-tourist.

Smiths Beach, is currently under threat from a 'motivated' developer with deep pockets who wants to turn a hansome profit and then move onto the next vulnerable location. They have plans to build an obscene resort and residential development on one of the most beautiful headlands that will totally vandalise the beach. The expected 2-3 million dollar property prices will exclude all but the wealthiest from owning of visiting the complex.

To make matters worse, while facing incredible opostion from the locals the developer promised to compramise and work hand in hand with them to produce something that would be acceptable, when behind the scenes they were using discredited (disgraced ex-politicians who had already served jail tiome for corruption) lobbyists to threaten, induce and currupt local and state politicians to allow this development to break planning laws and public opinion. This resulted in a corruption and crime commission investigation which found public officials had acted disgracefully, yet have been allowed to remain invoved in the approval process of this development!!!!

If the developer wins this time - it wont be long before every bay, every headland with a view, every iconic beach will be developed and off limits to the average person. Stop them please.

Please visit this site : http://www.smithspoint.com and post on the message board registering your views towards this outrage. We need international attention given to this plight. Please help.

the rich have to live somewhere too. more than likely it will raise the value of your own little dwellings.
