Ahhhh hippiemom...so wise and yet so wrong... ;)

    Shall we dance again? ;)
For the benefit of those who haven't seen us dance before? ;)

We have a lot of practice, I'm sure we have the steps down by now ;)

Does this mean you don't agree with restricting abortions to the first trimester or so? Does this mean you'd allow any type of abortion that doctors could dream of?

I think it's O.K. to have laws. There are also laws I disagree with and think should be taken off the books. Is that some kind of, I don't know, unusual stand for a person to take?

John McCain does a 180 on his abortion beliefs. I guess since he’s running in ’08 he’ll have to move to the right to get the GOP nomination. He was one of the few Republicans I respected. The key word being WAS.

Anything to get those stupid people's votes, I guess. The ones that want a Constitutional Amendment to have Jesus installed as automatic President when He comes back to the United States to save us.

No, I'm in favor of restrictions after 20 weeks or so, once a central nervous system has developed.

It would be political suicide to vote against that amendment. I would love to see the debate in congress on it.

So you obviously want some sort of governing body having jurisdiction.

I'm really curious how big on states rights the supporters of the overturn of Roe v. Wade would be if it also meant that in the next ten years, let's say, 40 of the 50 states legalized gay marriage. Or what about if the legalization of marijuana was left up to the states and no longer a federal crime and most states opted to legalize it.

Fine by me. Actually, terrific by me.

Late in pregnancy, yes. I should have worded my initial post differently, sorry for the confusion.

And my guess... Jesus ain't coming here to save us from our comfortable homes where we fight over PlayStations instead of food. My guess... the Dude is going to Africa to help those people who fight over a bowl of rice instead of PlayStations.

Besides, Jesus would never make it to the U.S. He'd be placed on the 'No Fly List' by Homeland Security and get reported by Minutemen crossing the border without legal documents in Arizona... in a stretch of the 2,000 mile border with Mexico not covered by the 700 mile fence. The closest He'd get to the U.S. is Camp X-Ray, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

I'm pro-choice by whatever means necessary. I'm no more "pro-abortion" than I am "pro-birth" as I wouldn't feel it my duty to encourage or discourage abortion; particularly when it comes to people I've never met nor know their circumstances.

Really? Whatever means? Like through force, maybe gunpoint?

I respect that you have really strong feelings about this issue.

    Sounds GREAT to me!!!!

But guess what...it's the states that are currently voting AGAINST gay marriage all over the country. Usually by a 75-25 margin too...stinks, but that's what we have right now. It's one fo those cases where I actually think the federal government needs to step in, since it really is a civil rights issue in my mind...but then again, I'm sure abortion is very similar in other people's minds...if that is what they call a mind ;)

But see you, and a handful of the conservatives on this board, I believe are the minority. I think as much as they like to think they are for states rights they really aren't if it involves legislation they're not in favor of.

I think you can tweak the whole gay marriage thing to allow civil unions with all the rights of a marriage and make a majority of the pro-gay marriage crowd happy.

Yeah, doesn't matter, I'd never vote for that hippie anyhow...he'd be a better leader of the UN. If that craphole still exists when he gets back.

If every state decided that abortion would stay legal, then nothing would change. Not all states would keep abortion legal, though. There's the problem.

then you can try to get a constitutional amendment to protect it. as it is, i see nothing in the constitution about abortion and the reasoning the supreme court used to "find" it was a stretch to say the least. i usually cringe when people throw around terms like activist judges, but i have to say... occasionally it is true.

You're surprised by this? It were bound to happen. Same thing with Giuliani. It seems like a good idea upon emergence, but there's no way somebody can represent the GOP with moderate or centristic ideology. The ball starts to roll in the middle, but during the course it gradually slides towards the right, failing to knock all the pins down. Following this the moderates and independents are left standing, along with those on the left ;)

While I do have strong feelings about the issue, the "whatever means" bit was just in response to the post I quoted.

As I understand it (I'm no lawyer) Roe v. Wade was a medical privacy ruling that stemmed from an abortion case - women can legally have abortions because the state has no right violate patient/doctor confidentiality. So, while abortion rights aren't mentioned in the Constitution, the question is, are privacy rights? That's debatable, I suppose; though I'm going to keep with the side that says yes even if it's proven to me that they aren't.

Of course, I might be wrong on the ruling - that's just the way I've always understood it.
