Awesome New Ted!

New Ted talks are available on http://www.ted.com
In a wide-ranging talk, Vilayanur Ramachandran explores how brain damage can reveal the connection between the internal structures of the brain and the corresponding functions of the mind. He talks about phantom limb pain, synesthesia (when people hear color or smell sounds), and the Capgras delusion, when brain-damaged people believe their closest friends and family have been replaced with imposters.

Hod Lipson demonstrates a few of his cool little robots, which have the ability to learn, understand themselves and even self-replicate. At the root of this uncanny demo is a deep inquiry into the nature of how humans and living beings learn and evolve, and how we might harness these processes to make things that learn and evolve.

I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

Ramachandran?
I like him too! He's one of my favs.
That's the kind of scientist I like. One with a sense of humor that can relate his findings and research so that it's easily understood.
I'm just finishing up on the synesthesia. But gee that bit about the phantom arm is so exciting to hear! Well for me anyway.

oh? So we should specifically not discuss science?

I guess this is a "learn something new" sort of forum, too. On the other hand, when it is presented with such inevitablity from the same poster over and over, it doesn't seem so new anymore. It seems more like an agenda.

Yeah, but gue, surely you're smart enough to choose what interests you and ignore the rest? I mean folks can have an agenda, doesn't mean that the rest of us are gonna follow it.
It interests him, which is why he posts it. And often times I'll watch it and comment because it will interest me. I mean I find it much more interesting to see the science lectures than the endless politics threads. Not that there's anything wrong with the politics threads or the people that get involved in them, but they get a bit monotonous for me. I say bring on all the information and people can reject or embrace it.

I'm not much of a googler, but if I decided to post everything I googled that I thought to be interesting, wouldn't you consider me to be sort of abusing the privilege of this forum? Especially when the end result almost inevitably concludes in a hashing out of differences with just one or two other posters? I think most of these posts, though possibly of some fleeting interest to many are always, almost without variablity, hijacked by the original poster himself in an attempted display of intellectual-scientific-neurological logic superiority. It is an ego-serving practice that I've, quite honestly, grown tired of. Even if I don't have to read the posts... this is a current events forum, and if you think of all the crapola resulting in the poster's self-serving agenda, he's stealing a lot of broadband from the servers that could be better used for the topics of the day.

So you're suggesting that he be censored? Based on how you view his threads topics? My understanding of it is, if you're not interested or you have a problem with a particular poster you're supposed to put them on ignore. Difficult I know but as it's all subjective that seems to me to be the best option available to you. Ironic I know that I'm saying this to you today, but I don't have a problem with his scientific posts and when I do I tell him so or avoid the topic. I find his posting of scientific threads VERY USEFUL in terms of current events as they apply to my life and I know I'm not alone.
Anyway, I'm not getting into it with you. I found the link interesting and I'm glad he posted it and the other stuff he's posted in the past.

No, censorship no. I guess maybe I'm just asking of Ahnimus a little more etiquette in his style. Maybe a little more honesty. I'm not demanding anything of anyone. Just a few less, "just got it fresh off a google search, let's rock," sort of posts.

hehe! You really don't like google do you gue?
Well I can understand what you're saying, I guess we all just gotta roll with it.
I mean we all have bad days and our "style" suffers. Had one today meself.
I feel sorry for Ahnimus in that when he posts this stuff I'm usually one of the few people that view and reply and I have absolutely no skill when it comes to debating or getting my point across on most of this scientific stuff. That must be really frustrating for him. But I'm grateful that he posts it because I probably wouldn't otherwise see it.
Anyhoo, I thought the first video was REALLY interesting, especially the bit about the phantom limbs and how they've been able to help people suffering phantom limb pain. AND I found it exciting that a lot of what the lecturer was talking about had to do with nerves and training them. I have quite an interest in training and retraining nerves.
