This is a really interesting look at the history of the world's religions and their connection with psychedelic substances. It's quit intersting.
For example it suggests that easter egg hunting originates with ancient shamans. Who would send their children into the forest in search of sprouting Amanita muscaria (a mushroom). When the amanita begin to sprout they look like eggs. http://blogsimages.skynet.be/images_v2/000/023/828/20061026/dyn001_original_960_720_pjpeg_23828_913ca4b242a841247aea87011045f4c6.jpg
They would then pick the mushrooms for celebration of the winter solstice (Dec. 25) and hang them on a tree to dry out. Hence, we have the Christmas tree with it's ornaments.
Santa Claus is suggested to be an anthropomorphism of the Amanita muscaria with his red and white appearance and his black boots. In ancient times the tribes people would build chimney's into their huts and in the winter, the snow would cover the main entrance, so the shaman would enter through the chimney to deliver the amanita muscaria for the Solstice celebration.
In the later stages of the amanita muscaria's life-cycle top curls up and becomes a golden colour. It would collect rain water and the water would become enriched with the active psychedelic agent in the mushroom. This is suggested to be the Holy Grail.

Summary taken from http://www.pharmacratic-inquisition.com
Thousands of years ago, in the pre monarchic era, psychedelic/entheogenic substances where publicly known world wide and were respected for their ability to bring forth the divine, Yahweh, God, The Great Spirit, etc., by the many cultures who used them. Often the entire tribe or community would partake in the entheogenic rites. These rites were often used in initiation into adulthood, for healing, to help guide the community in the decision process, and to bring the direct religious experience to anyone seeking it, that might take these psychedelic sacraments properly.
In the pre literate world, the knowledge of psychedelic plant sacraments, as well as fertility rites and astronomical knowledge surrounding the sun, stars, and zodiac, known as astrotheology, were anthropomorphized into human/god like beings so their stories and practices could be passed down for generations. Weather changes over millenniums caused environmental changes that altered the available foods and plant sacraments available in the local vicinity. If a tribe lost its shamanic El-der (El - God), all of the tribe's knowledge of their plant sacraments as well as astronomical knowledge would be lost.

I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

The popularity of the image spawned urban legends that Santa Claus was in fact invented by Coca-Cola or that Santa wears red and white because those are the Coca-Cola colors. In fact, Coca-Cola was not even the first soft drink company to utilize the modern image Santa Claus in its advertising – White Rock Beverages used Santa in advertisements for its ginger ale in 1923 after first using him to sell mineral water in 1915.[1][2]

If you watch the vid, you can see ancient depictions of shamans, the people santa is modeled after. St Nicholas for example, wore read and white. You can see some images at this wikipedia article, but the video is much better.

Here is a rather odd image from 1863 depicting Santa in a spotted shirt

American psychedelicists Jonathan Ott, James Arthur, Jan Irvin and Andrew Rutajit as well as UK mycologist Dr. Patrick Harding suggest that many of the modern features attributed to Santa Claus may somehow be derived from those of the Kamchatkan or Siberian shaman. During the midwinter festival (holiday season) in Siberia (near the North Pole), the shaman would enter a yurt (home) through the shangrak (chimney), bringing with him a sack of fly agaric mushrooms (presents) to give to the inhabitants. This type of mushroom is brightly colored red and white, like Santa Claus. Although some question the relevance of this, the above facts provide many interesting associations. The mushrooms were often hung (to dry) in front of the fireplace, much like the stockings of modern-day Christmas. Furthermore, the mushrooms were associated with reindeer who were known to eat them and become intoxicated. Reindeer are also associated with the shaman, and like Santa Claus, many people believed that the shaman could fly. The fly agaric mushroom has appeared on traditional Christmas cards in Europe for many years. [3]
I can pull images from Google all day about this particular mushroom, which is depicted in Mario Bros, Smurfs and all over, it's quite clearly Amanita Muscaria because that's just what it looks like. It's kind of an odd looking mushroom.
