Ok, So, firstly a definition
Main Entry: nerd
Pronunciation: 'n&rd

: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits <computer nerds>
- nerd·i·ness /'n&r-dE-n&s/ noun
- nerd·ish /'n&r-dish/ adjective
- nerdy /-dE/ adjective

Ok, I don't really agree with this defintion. I think we've all experienced periods of unattractiveness or socially ineptness. I think most people born in the last 30 years have some computer skills and I think a lot of people have academic pursuits. Is it possible for someone to be a cool nerd? Can you have a Nerdy Jock?
Or is this just one of those social labels applied to people we feel we are above in coolness? Why is it so "cool" to be a drunken bar fly with less than average intelligence and almost complete ignorance?
My belief is that all these labels (Jock, Nerd, Geek, Cool, etc..) are something we use to categorize people to make ourselves look better. Most people when asked will say they don't fall into one of these categories, but can easily place others in this category. For example, I talked to this woman online with many bodily modification (I.e. piercings, tattoos.) and who dressed in black gothic style. I asked "Do you consider yourself 'Goth'?" and her reply was "No, I don't, but my friends are and I dress like them."
I personally feel like kind of a nerd, though I used to be a geek, and I'm mostly cool. So I don't get it, there is this video on youtube, this emo kid trashes nerds. Obviously he's ignorant to say "Nerds don't touch boobies". In other words assuming all nerds are male, they are too uncool to be attractive to the opposite sex. This is firstly ignoring the fact that there are female nerds as well and obviously they will be attracted to each other at some point if they are in-fact socially inept. That brings up the point that if a group of socially "inept" people are attracted to each other to create a community of "nerds" or "geeks" then are they not part of society and therefor socially adept?
Something to talk about anyway

I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

That's not my definition of Atheism.
How do you figure it's a "coping strategy"?
It's an alternative perspective on reality. I would argue a more down-to-earth perspective. In that it doesn't contain any metaphysical or heavenly elements. In-fact Atheism only includes one element; Deities do not exist.
I personally view the reliance on an omnipotence of total goodness, or the illusion thereof as closer resembling a "coping strategy".
I think any philosopher would agree that having no reliance on karma, God or any thing of the sort, with a full acceptance of complete lack of purpose and the inevitable ending of existence upon death, as far from coping.
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.
-Oscar Wilde
Actually, atheism, literally, only denies theism, one God. It is, at the least, a socio-political coping strategy.
Nerdism on the other hand...
i forget.

We both need to get out more often.
That's all I have to say on this subject any more.

Dude, I am an Atheist. I know what I believe. It's not a socio-political strategy. It's a perspective on reality. If there is one important thing to your 'self' it's your perspective on reality. In every head is a different world. Everyone views life differently. I've personally made a point to try to filter out the distortion and get the message clearly. Religion sounds like static.
Haha, whateva'
gue, you are emphasizing my point in this thread. As if, not "getting out" is uncool and/or nerdy and "getting out", i.e. seeking social interaction, is a requirement for sanity. While in our modern era, "getting out" entails recreational activity usually consisting of mind altering substances and engaging in casual sex. Not exactly ideal for maintaining one's sanity.
I dunno man. That's your defintion. I start feeling nerdy when I make 80 posts here over a few days, or something like that. Neither you or I have posted much lately, so by my standards we're not particularly nerdy.
I like the atheism subject better. I knew you would understand that, even if you disagree.

I am an atheist, yet I don't deny God, nor the Gods. Religion? I go through beer phases and music phases and love phases, and other things, in no particular order. Those kinds of things can have a religious consumption of one's time.
