Spare some change?

So, I went grocery shopping at A&P today. I stood outside finishing my Tim Horton's and smoked a cigarette. This guy standing there asks me "Can you spare some change?". So I said "Nah man, sorry." Then he said something about the weather and we got talking a little bit. Finally, I asked "So, what do you need money for?" and he replied "Food, I was mugged outside Money Mart, some one knocked me out and stole $915 from me." then he pulls out this piece of paper from the OPP regarding the issue. He says "I have to find a way to pay my rent too. This [Begging] is the last thing I ever thought I'd be doing."
Through all of this he's asking people entering A&P for change. I'd say probably 60% of people said no and the rest just ignored him. No one gave him anything or asked any questions.
Finally I said "Well I have to go do my shopping." and he asked "Can you grab me something to drink?" and hands me a dollar. I took the dollar and asked "What do you want?" and he said "Mountain Dew is my favourite." There were no single cans of mountain dew so I bought a case, gave him a few cans and a couple of bucks.
I was having a smoke with him shooting the shit some more. He asks me what country I am from and I replied "I'm Canadian.". Then he says "No you aren't, you aren't Native.". My bro walks outside and the guy asks him for money, my bro handed him a few bucks without knowing why he needed it. Out of all the people that went in and out, my brother and I were the only people to give him anything. He seemed like an alright guy though. The conversation on social classes was interesting.

I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

Awesome. Truly Awesome.
He just said it was good karma. This was the days before My Name is Earl. lol Anyway it was good lesson and so I try to at least talk w/ them. They're human too and definitely would rather not be begging.
what is money mart and why was the guy carrying over $900 in cash? that sounds pretty shady. not a bad story he's got thre though. did he mention how his kids were starving and freezing cos of the lack of heat? that's usually my fav part.
Money Mart is a place you go to get an advance on your paycheck. They just give you the cash ahead of time and charge an interest.
So you go in give them your bank account info and they give you cash. When payday comes they take your money.
ah. then none of this surprises me.
Sounds like my uncle... He was walking around downtown with my Grandma and said 'watch this guy, he's a little crazy' and all he hears is 'HI EVAN!' (my uncles name) because apparantly he went to the Salvation Army and bought sleeping bags and what not.
