The future of entertainment.

What will the future of entertainment be?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

A technique that stimulates brain regions producing experiences by magnetic waves traveling through the cranium.

Movies, Television, Games, Cybersex. All of these things will be experienced in full realism, in the near future.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

not very likely in the near future. It would be so complicated (and expensive) to develop a TMS unit that could fire rapidly enough and precise enough to elicit different emotions / sensations that I don't think it could happen, at least using the TMS stimulators available now. It would be kinda cool though.

I'd be interested in what you consider "real", as in "realism", Ahnimus.

well instead of watchin a movie on a big screen the "realism" will be that you are actually on the set of the movie... the characters will be normal height, you could smell them, maybe fondle a bum cheek, etc...

i'm guessing at that... but that would be realism to me.. especially the bum cheek bit
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Realism meaning seemingly real. As far as our internal reality goes the experiences would be 100% real, though in physical reality we would be sitting in a chair with a device on our heads.

Perhaps you are right, but the technology advancement curve is exponential. It could be sooner than either of us think.

I'm thinking about trying to get a tour of the Laurentien University where they experiment with TMS and paranormal experiences. Then I can get a first-hand look at how the technology is used. I'm just not sure if they will allow me to tour the facility.

We have a TMS stimulator and I have some experience using it for reflex testing in humans. If you stimulate through the brain it's very difficult to get actions. You can elicit responses in the hands and poss the feet b/c the size of the motor portion on the brain. Now, if you get peripherally you can stimulate any nerve that is fairly superficial but it would be very difficult to harness the energy to any meaningful/ pleasurefull end. Now that is just our TMS unit, there may be others out there that allow it. But I wouldn't even want to think about the cost of it.

So you are agreeing that a person's perception of something being real makes it 100% real in their experience, even if objectively it is not physically real?

Well, I'm talking about TMS stimulation of the Septum and Ventral Lateral Hypothalamus.

I'm not sure if that's possible now through TMS. But certainly it is through evasive procedures.

  • It's coming faster than a lot of people think. And it coming to us exponentially faster as well

I like the virtual maid that Michael Rapaport has in the film The Sixth Day.

  • Check the second part of this clip on "Living computers". I've read that technology is expected to double every 72 hours by 2010?!
