A 21-year-old man in Canada allegedly used the internet to lure and extort pornographic images from more than 100 young girls in Ontario, Alberta and the United Kingdom, police said Friday.
OPP Det.-Sgt Frank Goldschmidt said there may be victims who have not yet been identified. (CBC) OPP Det.-Sgt Frank Goldschmidt said there may be victims who have not yet been identified. (CBC)
Police allege Mark Gary Bedford of Kingston, Ont., hacked into his victims' e-mail accounts, gained access to their buddy lists and tricked the young girls into sending him pornographic photos and videos over the internet.
The "extreme number of victims" lived in Edmonton and Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and in Kent, England, OPP Det.-Sgt Frank Goldschmidt told a news conference in Toronto.
"I have never seen this many victims involved and I'm safe to say that at this point and time in this early stage of this investigation we're looking at well in excess of 100," said Goldschmidt.
In many cases, investigators said, the girls used webcams on computers in their bedrooms to comply with the suspect's demand for images.
"[The suspect] would convince those victims to expose themselves to him by a webcam, at which time he would capture those images," Goldschmidt said.
Police allege the man used blackmail and threats of death, rape and bodily harm to convince his victims to continue sending him pornographic material.

Parents need to strongly consider the validity of their children having access to webcams.
The webcam topic was addressed on a very interesting Oprah, where it was strongly suggested we do not allow our children access to them.

Aw well, enjoy!
It's the internet, and in our modern day, what do people expect?
Time to get freaky, it's the evil hour, waiting for the second coming. Bring it!
