175 killed in Iraq car bombings

BAGHDAD - Four suicide bombers hit Kurdish Yazidi communities in northwest Iraq with nearly simultaneous attacks on Tuesday, killing at least 175 people and wounding 200 others, the Iraqi military said.

The death toll was the highest in a concerted attack since Nov. 23, when 215 people were killed by mortar fire and five car bombs in Baghdad's Shiite enclave of Sadr City.

The bombs tore through the districts near Qahataniya, 75 miles west of Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city, said Abdul-Rahman al-Shimiri, the top government official in the area, and Iraq army Capt. Mohammed Ahmed.

Yazidis are members of an ancient, primarily Kurdish, religious sect that worships an angel figure some that Christians and Muslims believe to be the devil.

Al-Shimiri and Ahmed said at least 30 homes were destroyed in the bombings.

Dhakil Qassim, mayor of Sinjar, a town near where the attacks occurred, said al-Qaida in Iraq was behind the bombings, citing what he said were Kurdish government intelligence reports.

"This is a terrorist act and the people targeted are poor Yazidis who have nothing to do with the armed conflict," Qassim said. "Al-Qaida fighters are very active in this area near the Syrian border."

U.S. helicopters swooped into the area to evacuate the wound to hospitals in Dahuk, a Kurdish city near the Turkish border about 60 miles north of Qahataniya.

Civilians cars and ambulances also rushed the wounded to hospitals in Dahuk, police said.

You have a very narrow-minded view of things. Not too many Conservatives would favor people bombing other people....especially when the people doing the bombing aren't "us".
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

  • I love how the American general states that the surge is working, and then seconds later CNN has this female reporter saying that, according to virtually every source she has spoken to, Iraq is "getting worse by the day". This wasn't news to me, but I'm sure it was to some.

Fuck Centcom. Fuck Bush. And for the most part, fuck the American media who rarely gives the true story.
  • Journalists have this thing now where if you ask hard questions, you will be denied access to future press briefings. Kiss the good salary goodbye. All the front row students get a special pat on the head.

So there's a huge filter right there. On top of that the news is scripted and approved, word for word, and you risk your job as a reporter by stepping out of line.

Journalism has become some kind of sick, perverted ,incestuous relationship with govt officials.

I'd like to see Bush have to sit down with Michael Ware from CNN, the Iraqi reporter who just gives it out straight. He's got an Aussi accent. I laugh hwen he gets on CNN and essentially says things like, " well Wolf, Iraq is pretty much fucked", or, "well, that flies in the face of everything I've heard about Iraq the last month". Shit like that.

Ya, Bush should have to sit down with some like him for a public interview. Dare to dream.....

Have you seen this? It's been banned from American TV.

He keeps cutting her off and reciting rehearsed scripts in circles, but she at least get a few ones in and gets his feathers ruffled.

My favorite line: "people join terrorist organizations becuase there is no hope....no freedom.." Oh yeah...really? you don't say....

lol... It's like he's talking against exactly what he himself is doing.

well, isn't al-Qaida in Iraq because of republicans....? That's a rhetorical question, we already know the answer is yes.

Come on dude, i know it's not the Porch, but help me out. If there was an "Al Qaida Iraq" before the war, they couldnt fill a 7/11. Sadaam crushed any threat to him including Al Qaida. (not defending Sadaam, just stating a fact).

The blood of every innocent Iraqi is on the hands of the "Coalition of the Willing"; headed by US. No matter haw bad Sadaam was, at least the avg citizen knew that they had a choice. As miniscule a choice it was, they could shut up and give up some liberties and live. Right now they can go and "vote" for a puppet goverment and still risk dying at any moment while going to buy milk for their kids.

Just b/c the perpertrator isnt a US soldier it doesnt mean that we can wash our hands of the blood of the dead ever since we invaded that country.

It's funny that the same people (not u specificily) that were all "kill the arabs" and "kill em all and let allah sort em out" now want to be selective when it comes to whats going on in Iraq.

so the fact that al queda (who are actual people, mostly from other countries) is killing innocent iraqis means nothing? they hold no responsibility for actually carrying out the bombings?

I also agree. but the blood is not only on our hands.

we won't. We can't leave in one day. But we CAN leave, in a studied, steady manner. And we can allow Iraq to discover for themselves what they need to do. We can show them by example how democracy works, but so far that hasn't really worked, has it?

We can leave in a manner that will allow our troops to slowly and steadily come home. It's not a matter of "Winning" or "Retreating". It's a matter of withdrawing military troops that are no longer needed to push idealogy. Diplomacy works better in that regard. And diplomacy rarely kills anyone.

This is tired conversation. America created al-qaida in iraq by waging this horrific war. So your argument is that we KEEP doing what pretty much everyone now admits was a mistake? I'm not calling you crazy, jlew, but that train of thought is absolutely, without question, 100% insane. Nearly all of humanity has accepted the fact that this administration fucked up by going into Iraq. So where's the disconnect? When did it ever become okay to realize you fucked up but then keep doing it hoping that fixes the original mistake? Why isn't it obvious to all species that don't eat their own shit that the first way to right this wrong is to stop doing what we're all accepting was a mistake, which is to be in iraq. Jesus, this is something my 6yo daughter could understand.

I'm not saying leave Iraq high and dry. We owe them a lot for what we've done. Like an international peace force...and lots and lots of money.
