A Question

I was wondering what your opinions were of people who post their political views of nations other than their own. I live in the UK, and still read up on US politics, and like to occansionally have my say on some of the issues that concern Americans.

I wanted to know if you looked upon this as a good thing, someone taking interest in issues that concern people other than themselves, or do you think that as it doesn't concern me, i should butt out?

Was just interested to know how people feel about this...

Being a dual citizen (US and Canada) I do both, and have no problem with outside commentary.

I think it is vital to proclaim your views about other nations (be it good or bad) as we are all living in the same blue globe.....plus I think a person with a great understanding of other nations is a good thing...ie. makes you think outside the box...I find those only concerned with their own country have themselves a superiorty complex when it comes to their thinking of the world....

when it affects my country. when what is being purported as so called truth or as in the interests of the world and it's blatant hypocrisy, yes it's okay. i don't say what i say just to amuse myself and i don't say what i say cause i 'hate' certain countries. i say it because i see something wrong. and quite frankly i'd welcome vigorous debate about what my country(australia) gets up to. :)

My rule of thumb has always been, if I know nothing about the topic then unless I've got a question I stay out of it.

Otherwise, I see no reason not to participate in a debate simply because I'm not in the country of origin.

And given that so much of what gets debated and enacted as policy in America eventually becomes an issue and quite often policy here in Australia, I think I'm quite within my rights to participate. :)

More or less, yes. And everything has consequences. I.e, Maybe if people had paid more attention to the Nazis in Germany in the 1920's and early 30's, then that shit could have been stopped before it became so big.

Also, American politics does tend to affect every corner of the globe in some way or another. Irish politics...not so much.
Still if I have something to say about something that happens 1000 miles away I'll say it. And I always welcome outside views on my home country.

The more lifestyles that creep into a country from other nations, the more you better know about them. And with that you are free to comment on anything and everything.

:D Well there's no shutting me up either :D but still, it would be nice to get the opinion of a 'foreigner' once in a while

Thanks Jeanie :) well you have replied to mine in the past and you too EF. Also, I've learned quite a bit about Americans and other nationalities from this place and that can only be a good thing.

I have been watching your current political situation with a little interest, we have seen quite a bit of Gerry Adams and Bertie O'Hearn here on the tele in recent months. And I must say I'm very keen to see the outcome of the process. How do you guys feel about it?

Oh and I'm VERY keen to see Scotland get it's independence.

Are there any plans afoot for Wales to go down the same road do you know Helen? :)

I don't know much about Scotland or Wales... even in Northern Ireland I think everyone just got kinda bored with the whole thing and that's why it came to an end :D

Bertie's our 'Primeminister' (Taoiseach) and he could be on the way out next week. We're having a general election this day next week and the whole thing is absolutely fucking comical. A few party candidates (including one leader) actually had a go at eachother in the street yesterday in front of the whole media :D . One of their phones rang and the party leader said 'it's your friends calling to tell you to stop making a fool of yourself' :D . Oh ya gotta love the dry political humour... bunch of kids the whole lotta them.

Also the big debate is gonna be on TV tonight between Bertie and his main opposition... should be fun :D

:D Damn!! Sounds like we're missing all the good stuff in the media here! :D
They're not nearly that funny our lot. Well funny, strange, and comedic in a Keystone Cops kinda way, but not actually funny! And we never seem to get the fun stuff in our media bites, well not unless it's George. :D
I'll keep a look out to see if we get any of the debate.
Can I have the phonetic pronounciation of Taoiseach please Helen? I'm assuming it's Gaelic. Gotta learn what I can where I can. :)

    Taoiseach - pronounced 'tee shock'

But lol, they're really NOT funny at all, especially this one guy... he's the leader of teh most right wing party in our politics... but it was just petty bickering between them where yer man replied 'no YOU'RE the one making a fool of yourself' :D

You can read about it there :D

'Earlier the 20-minute street row between Mr McDowell and Mr Gormley erupted near the home of the Tánaiste in Ranelagh, Dublin as he attempted to repeat a stunt from the last election by climbing a lamp-post to unveil a new poster.

Mr Gormley heckled continuously as his fellow Dublin South East TD attempted to make a speech on the theme of his poster message: "Left-Wing Government? - No Thanks." "You say that we're going to raise corporation tax. That is a lie. Withdraw that," shouted Mr Gormley. "I'm not taking any nonsense from you any more," he added.

Mr McDowell responded by saying that Mr Gormley had "lost it". The argument raged as the Green TD insisted that Mr McDowell withdraw claims he had made about his party's policies.'

:D Lol, I know, it's just brilliant though! This election is absolutely fucking hilarious.

    Here's sky's take on it:

    http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1265339,00.html

'Mr Tayto, the mascot for Ireland's leading brand of crisps, has entered the election race in a big way - complete with battle bus, website, election posters and a theme song. He is even being aided and abetted by veteran comedian Frank Kelly, better known as Father Jack Hackett from Father Ted.'

'Fine Gael candidate Lucinda Creighton has a cunning wee plan to attract votes. The South Dublin hopeful has had beer mats with her face on printed and distributed to pubs throughout the area. She has even put up posters in the pub toilets, complete with slogan which apes an on-going responsible drinking campaign: "Don't see a great vote wasted. Vote sensibly."'

Who the fuck is SHE anyway? and where did she come from? She's popping up everywhere... they ripped the solid piss out of her on the panel last night :D

'Continuing the culinary theme, Irish Socialist Network candidate John O'Neill has come up with a pizza menu-style election poster - complete with the tasty slogan: A Slice Of Socialism In Dublin North West. On it, he dismisses the Bertie Ahern Double Dough Pizza as "greasy, cheesy and full of hot air."'

Appreciate all this info and your attempts at educating me on the finer points of Irish Politics.

But I'll read this in the morning and try to make a suitably intelligent response after I've had my coffee. :D

I'll post regarding American politics deliberately to challenge the brain dead argument, "If ya ain't from dis country, ya can't comment."

As for Irish politics, I listen to Newstalk 106 a bit. I used to listen to RTE Radio 1 a lot, but it's become shite recently.

well. i have to admit i vomitted a little in my mouth when i heard the name ian paisley on my radio last week. then in the same breath i heard the name martin mcguinness and laughed at the thought of both these men having to deal with each other officially for the collective good of their country. ahh to be a fly on the wall.

69 so it's only Irish people who comment on U2 or Michael Flatley boards? I doubt it. Besides in the rules it doesn't say we can only discuss American politics :p
