    I think economic dumping takes precedence over arbitrary continental borders.
  • Personally I think it's population,location and culture mean it shouldn't be considered to join the EU.

    eu-EUROPEAN union, if turkey were to join it would become a complete misnomer and expansion would be unlimited

    From wikipedia;

    Turkey is an official candidate to join the European Union. Turkish European ambitions date back to 1963 Ankara Agreements. Turkey started preliminary negotiations on 3 October 2005. However, analysts believe 2015 is the earliest date the country can join the union because of the plethora of economic and social reforms it has to complete, and because the 2007-2013 budget takes no account of the considerable costs Turkey's accession will involve.[17]. Part of the problem with Turkey's possible accession is the fact that 97% of its land mass lies on the Anatolian peninsula of western Asia (also known as Asia Minor) and a mere 3% lies within continental Europe. Turkish officials have countered this by stating that countries such as Ukraine and Belarus lie just as far east, whilst Georgia, which is partially within Europe geographically, is situated even further east than Turkey and shares part of its northeastern border. Thus it can be claimed that Turkey shares a border with another European state to both the east and west.

    The only reason why Turkey might join the EU is because of the cheap industrial costs there.

    People will throw in tons of reasons why Turkey shouldn't join: extremism is on the rise, basic human rights are not respected, more than half the counrty in part of Asia.
    But it will boil down to one reason: economics.

    The historical predecessor of modern Turkey, the Ottoman Empire, was a major player in European history due to its influence and its occupation of a fair piece of territory. Many considered it part of Europe, Asia and Africa, or else it would not have garnered the nickname, "The sick man of Europe."

    Originally coined for the Ottoman Empire around the turn of the 20th century. Another factor to consider is that Turkey controls all sea access to the Black Sea, a sea outlet for some countries in Southeast Europe.

    True.........differentiating where Asia begins or Europe ends (physically) has always depended on who was setting the definition. It's sort like the whole "Is Pluto a planet" debate.

    what the fuck has this got to do with anything??? :confused: we're talking about Turkey here are we not...

    also the tag was assigned to the UK in late 50's right up until 1970's... not when you said :) but the name was created long before it this...

    'The sick man of Europe' term originated from the late 19th century when Russia labelled Turkey with it... it has also been used to describe your beloved Ireland you know.... as well as Spain, Portugal, etc... basically any country going through a financially lean time....

    Great point.........historically (and currently), they have had many a problems dealing internally with ethnic minorities, and I believe that the presence of a very large U.S. Air Force Base on Turkish soil has long been their "Get out of Jail Free" card.
