One story? Ahem.
DCGARDEN, I'd like you to meet NCFan. NCFan, this is DCGARDEN.
I would say that this is some pretty good evidence that the "surge" and new strategy under Patraues can work, and that the insurgency and sectarian violence can be quelled, which would help spur political consessions to unify Iraq.
IMHO, the bottom line is that the US can win with the caveat that the people of Iraq know that we are committed to winning. The vast majority of Iraqi's want no part of the sectarian voilence, and the only way to defeat it is for the citizens to put an end to it. All that means is fighting people who they see planting a road-side bombs, etc.(when they can), or giving intel to the Americans or Iraqi armies.
But that won't happen if they think the US is going to pull out and leave them vulnerable. Many Iraqi's will not pledge their loyalty to any side, becuase they are scared that if their side loses, they will get killed. They are waiting to see who is more serious about this conflict, and who is willing to see it through. That is what the politicians in Iraq are waiting for as well.
People make the argument that Shia's have no motivation to compromise as long as Americans are in Iraq. The reality is that Shia's have no motivation to compromise, becuase they just have to wait until we pull out, and then they won't have to make compromises - they will basically inherit Iraq like they want it.
...
I understand the point you are making... The 'Surge' is working because the insurgency concentrated in Baghdad is being overwhelmed by superior firepower. And it is a good thing because none of the other efforts will progress until security is established. But, I also have some questions regarding the 'Surge'.
It is working in Baghdad... but, what about the other parts of Iraq? Shouldn't the 'Surge' be concerned of the possibility of insurgencies cropping up on other parts of the country?
Also... how long will the surge last? If it is temporary, what happens when the U.S. troop level receeds? If it is not temporary, isn't it an 'Escalation' of force, not a 'Surge'?
And we are currently arming Sunni fighters to fight Al Qaeda... what happens when Al Qaeda is defeated or driven out? Do we disarm these Sunni groups? do we reduce the number of U.S. Troops? What is the long range goal?
Finally, we discovered that many of the elements we have trainned in the Iraqi Security Force are militias loyal to Shi'ite clerics, such as Muqtada Al Sadr... what do we do about them? Taking on these independent Shi'ite militias are being done by Sunni fighters... do we expect the Shi'ites in the I.S.F. to kill their own kind?
...
And believe me... I want us to succeed over there. but, calling it a 'Surge' when it really should be an escalation of force doesn't help. We should just man up and tell it like it is. In order to win... a massive amount of U.S. military combat troops and supporting personel has to stay in Iraq for 10 to 20 years... at a cost of about double the 12 billion per month we are currently spending over there.
Is America willing to go this distance? Are you?

So, they built a football field. Woopty-fricken-doo!
With all this great news, I almost forgot that 50 people were killed today while celebrating a football victory. Yeah, I would say victory is within our grasp! Just stay the course for the next 50 years and then whatever con piece of garbage has taken the WH can make another tail-hook landing!
I like the story where they all get the fuck out and go home.
The rest I could care less to get a chubby over.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

No one is saying that. It was just a positive story from a place where there are not many left. Take it for what you will, but I wonder if you would say
Yeah, so fuckin what in front of a Marine who just returned from Iraq and this story came on the news while the two of you were standing next to each other in some store. I just wonder...

Are you suggesting that we should live under threat of violence from our own Marines?
