Washington 'snubbed Iran offer'

Iran gives millions of dollars to support the Hezbollah movement
Iran offered the US a package of concessions in 2003, but it was rejected, a senior former US official has told the BBC's Newsnight programme.
Tehran proposed ending support for Lebanese and Palestinian militant groups and helping to stabilise Iraq following the US-led invasion.

Offers, including making its nuclear programme more transparent, were conditional on the US ending hostility.

But Vice-President Dick Cheney's office rejected the plan, the official said.

The offers came in a letter, seen by Newsnight, which was unsigned but which the US state department apparently believed to have been approved by the highest authorities.

In return for its concessions, Tehran asked Washington to end its hostility, to end sanctions, and to disband the Iranian rebel group the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq and repatriate its members.

But as soon as it got to the White House, the old mantra of 'We don't talk to evil'... reasserted itself

Lawrence Wilkerson
Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had allowed the rebel group to base itself in Iraq, putting it under US power after the invasion.

One of the then Secretary of State Colin Powell's top aides told the BBC the state department was keen on the plan - but was over-ruled.

"We thought it was a very propitious moment to do that," Lawrence Wilkerson told Newsnight.

"But as soon as it got to the White House, and as soon as it got to the Vice-President's office, the old mantra of 'We don't talk to evil'... reasserted itself."

Observers say the Iranian offer as outlined nearly four years ago corresponds pretty closely to what Washington is demanding from Tehran now.

Since that time, Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah inflicted significant military losses on the major US ally in the region, Israel, in the 2006 conflict and is now claiming increased political power in Lebanon.

Palestinian militant group Hamas won power in parliamentary elections a year ago, opening a new chapter of conflict in Gaza and the West Bank.

The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on Iran following its refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.

Iran denies US accusations that its nuclear programme is designed to produce weapons.

What would you prefer? Nuclear war? Sounds like a great option.

Perhaps you should ask Iran that question. Last time I checked, they were running their mouths about wiping Israel off the map. That's why I take the article with a big grain of salt.

Dude, so now you use an al jazeera article to support your beliefs? kinda weird.

anyway, he said that the regimes in power should end, infact in the speech he even said like the shahs regime ended. meaning that it's possible. now we all know that it was the shah of iran. now was iran wiped off the map? nope, but his US backed regime was.

It just a lie that he ever said anything about destroying the whole country or anything like that.

At least you know the tension between the United States and Iran is in keeping with your personal wishes.

I used the Al Jazeera link because it was the first one I found...but it was an ironic twist of fate that worked out well because I thought it might surprise you to learn that EVEN AL FREAKING JAZEERA REPORTED THAT HE SAID THIS!!! Every freaking news agency in the world reported on this, and yet you easily brush it off as "just a lie".

    WTF?!?!?!

Why are you SO unwilling to believe that he said this when EVERYONE freaking reported that he did, even Al Jazeera?!!

How do you automatically believe that Cheney rejected Iran's olive branch based on some anonymous "senior former US official" source, while automatically not believing that Iran's President called for Israel to be wiped off the map?!?!

Do you always reject reality and then simply substitute your own?!! Seriously, he freaking said it! Every news agency quoted him!!! All over the world!!! It's not an opinion, it's a fact!!!

    ripple effect I guess.

keep in mind, they don't speak farsi in qatar.

One news story got so hyped up, perhaps it was just passed and passed?

Read the full translation of the speech and what the experts have said about it, best thing for you to do I guess. But I know you won't find "wiped off the map" anywhere.

you do know that this was a serious question right?......

Do you always reject reality and then simply substitute your own?!!

Read the speech yourself. No point in going on about this until then.

Well, if I was a betting man...and I am...my money goes on the President of Iran not wanting to play nice with Israel. Fair enough though, I understand your point.

The only true way to know, I guess, is for one of us to learn his language...and then get an unedited copy of his speech that hasn't been tampered with.
