And you are fooling yourself when you believe that the rebuilding of the schools and the ongoing violence are on equal footing. Because seriously, who care if the schools have a new coat of paint if the roads to it hide snipers, exploding trash cans and kidnappings that result in beheadings.
Secure the fucking place FIRST. That would be my priority... not rebuilding structures that no one uses.

why cant both happen at the same time? have the military and police secure the place and have engineering companies try to rebuild. and how do you know no one is using these structures? have you been there?

again, Im not going to argue that iraq isnt a fucked up place but why cant you acknowledge something positive instead of turning it around and make negative assumpitions.

This isn't positive. Bechtel is pulling out. We are giving up on the reconstruction.

pulling out? did you even read the article. they COMPLETED their work.

There is more reconstruction needed. But this is significant as the end of the US led reconstruction.

Many of the Bechtel "completed" projects have subsequently been sabotaged by terrorist insurgents.

The incestuous relationship between this government and Bechtel has led to "term contracts", meaning their work is over when their money ends, not when the school, hospital etc. is actually built. Here is an example:

"David Snider, a spokesman for the United States Agency for International Development, the State Department agency in charge of the project, said that technically, Bechtel’s contract was not being terminated because the contract did not actually require the company to complete the hospital.

“They are under a ‘term contract,’ which means their job is over when their money ends,” Mr. Snider said. So despite not finishing the hospital, he said, “they did complete the contract.”"

one of my favorite quotes ever, from the great stephen colbert:

"reality has a well-known liberal bias"

reality check. america went to war with Iraq. during that war, much infrastructure was destroyed. america hired contractors to fix some of what was destroyed. one of those companies finished work from a large contract to repair schools, roads, and a important well.

another take on reality? american fucked up the country, those schools that were repaired are emtpy and only used by snipers, dont repair the country, fix the volience.

You are so simplistic... that's so cute.

Security is the most important facet and should be the greatest priority. Why have an open school if there is open warfare in the streets (and please, don't resign to that L.A. Gang violence retort... last time I checked, an L.A.P.D. cruiser was not hit by an R.P.G. and close to 3,000 officers killed in the past 3 years).
With security in place... the construction sites would not be dangerous places to be. 450,000 trainned soldiers cannot control the violence in Baghdad and Anbar... isn't that a larger problem than fixing a school?

did you expect voluenteers to work for free? I hope there are many more contracts for companies to come in and rebuild the country we destroyed. I will cheer them along

There won't be. That is the significance of Bechtel leaving. And 97 out of 99 is bad when it is a deception.

ok guys, guess what, we did. you need to accept that fact. so now we are spending money to fix what we broke. would you rather we didnt rebuild schools and bridges?

We caused the death of 2.5 of every 100 people in Iraq. You can't fix them - or their friends and family. We also seriously injured another perhaps 1 of every 20.. perhaps worse..

    can't fix that...

and the numbers grow every day!

Bechtel IS pulling out, they have announced that they will not tender bids on the many infrastructure projects which remain. You are very, very naive to believe that this is a positive news story, in fact it scares me that you feel that way, as I assume you are of voting age.

    To quote:

"Did Iraq come out the way you hoped it would?" asked Cliff Mumm, Bechtel's president for infrastructure work. "I would say, emphatically, no. And it's heartbreaking."

Please, jlew, do some research before posting, this is a BAD thing that Bechtel is leaving, it isn't a sign of accomplishment. Also, I am NOT a Bechtel supporter by any means, if that is the way my post seems....this is the same company that killed a women in Boston because of their shoddy work on the Big Dig.

    I did do some research.

The company said it completed 97 of the 99 tasks it had been charged with completing by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

In a statement issued to the Congressional committee on government reform in late September, company president Cliff Mumm stood by the company's efforts.

although I did not know this was the big dig company. that sucked.
