i was friends with mike murphy in high school. we played football together, trained together during the summer. he was a good kid. we kind of lost touch after high school, saw him around at the gym once. . . i knew he had gone to penn state, didnt know he had joined the navy afterwards and then became a navy seal, ascending to the level of lieutenant. and then one day a year and a half ago i walked into a seven-eleven for a bottle of water and saw his high school yearbook photo on the cover of newsday, along with a story which told of how he was killed in a gun battle in afganastan. it was such a shocker. even though i hadnt seen him in a while, it saddened me greatly. i felt obligated to go to his wake, and ive never seen so many people in such a small place as this small funeral home. . .anyways i just had a flashback of it today because he's on the cover of newsday again today(with the headline "HERO") , this time because he's being considered for the congressional medal of honor, the highest honor they can bestow on you in the military.

Thanks for sharing this story, and for introducing me to Mike Murphy.

Thanks for sharing the story. Tragic. And the WWS lyrics you posted are incredibly moving, reading them in this context.

my understanding is that military solutes whomever the president is, and with congressional medal winners are the only ones the president has to solute first.

my condolences. I'm glad he will be recognized for his service.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)
