Today I voted for Obama

Thought I would share a little glimmer of what occurred today in my city in the USA. I haven't seen traffic so congested on a Tuesday as I did today, no matter where I was, downtown, midtown, suburbs, church parking lots, libraries, and schools the population was OUT! It was amusing actually. Where I live, the weather was beautiful, leaves falling, sun shining. I really didn't connect it all until I was running some errands around lunch when it hit me - today is Election Day and that is something to be happy about. I was just busy all morning working and even though I planned to vote, it was more of a duty in my mind than something to be happy about. But, the mood got me when I realized what was taking place. Now my state went Red, but the city I live in has strong Blue roots I know, but it doesn't really matter who they were voting for, they were voting and it was a duty that I felt people were more than happy to participate in. Its a FREE election and I know that many persons around the world don't get to experience that, so I am thankful!
Now, I don't like labels - I don't want to be defined by a party. But, I will not pretend that my roots are conservative, but I define that and no one else can. I could care less what any party says I should be, in fact I resent them telling me what I am or counting on me to take their party line. I find it actually a loss to know that parties and their idealogies want to put me in a bucket of either red or blue, conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat. Its an insult to my individuality to know they expect me to tow the line on their behalf and then they repay my allegiance with shit.
But today I voted for a man that I am happy to say I support. Not because he is the solution to all my problems or because he is going to implement government programs that are going to make me happy, but because I believe he has an ability I haven't seen much of in my life, to be his own man, to transcend politics, and be a leader.
Having heard and seen ignorance in full force the last few months (you wouldn't believe the crazy things I have heard about Obama), and even though I greatly respect John McCain for his lifetime of service to our nation, I did not feel he was the best choice for the next four years as President. In fact the fear placed in so many persons about a Obama Presidency, that is in my mind unjustified, and more like propoganda than true analysis of facts, is partly why I voted for Barack.
Despite all the failures of our leadership over the last several years, I am a believer in our country. I am a believer in our democracy. Bush had tough times and I cannot say that I would have preferred Gore or Kerry in hindsight during the last several years, as we had challenges I think were unprecendented, but I know he did not do the job that I would expect of a President. He had good intentions, but I am just fine that this chapter is over.
So today when I went into the voting booth, it was possibly the only time in my adult life that I was feeling optimistic with a ballot in hand, that what we were all doing was a good thing. No matter who the others were voting for, it was actually gave me some hope as I realized that just like in a story, you can always turn the page and read on in the next chapter. That's history in the making, that's freedom and democracy, and today was history lived.
So, I said a little prayer, regarding judgment and wisdom, and I did what I believed was the right thing all along. Vote for the first black American President, who is eloquent, intellegent, thoughtful, a loyal father and husband, a leader, and I believe like me, not just interested in the party line but in real progress for all Americans to make a better and more unified nation, and hopefully a better world. I hope this is good news for all of us, not just Americans, but people in places where things are far from blessed.
Here's to the future! And the next PJ album!
Good night from the middle, geographically and politically.
